Getting to Know Dave Madsen

Dave Madsen has had his ups and downs through life. When it comes to media management, Dave is the guy to turn to. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, a graduate of University of Nebraska at Lincoln with a degree in journalism, Madsen worked at KTIV in Sioux City for 29 years.

The down part in his life was when he was told by KTIV he would be getting let go. So he was stuck jobless, until Morningside College approached him about running the Mass Communication department. He instantly jumped on that opportunity, and has been head of the Mass Communication department now for three years.

In Madsens years leading up to Morningside he also held many other jobs along the way. While in college he work for KETV in Omaha. After college, while working for KTIV, he ran a children’s show, and also does magic.

Dave has big plans for MCTV, which is the Morningside college television station, are to get news on during dinner time, and for there to be a set news cast. Eventually this will all happen, but it will take a lot of time and work.

In the end Dave could not be any happier with how all this turned out. He had a great transition coming to Morningside and is hoping turn the Mass Communication department in the right direction.

BlackBerry: ‘We’ve now restored full services’

Blackberry phone users have hit quite a bit of snag in the past week. The madness started on Monday in Europe and spread to North America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and South America over the course of the next two days. Users could not send or receive e-mails or text messages. With Android and Apple Iphones sweeping the market, worries blackberry creators that they may lose customers off this. But with the problem now solved with just a little lag still in e-mailing.

With everyone today relying on technology this little thing that happened to the blackberry phones created panic for many users. I could not imagine how much people would freak out if the Iphone would crash or the Android. People today rely too much on technology and some would not be able to live without it.

Morningside Mens Basketball Preview

Expectations have been set high for this year’s Morningsides basketball team. Coming off last season’s 15-17 record, the Morningside Mustangs men’s basketball team opens its season beginning in early November. With a deep bench and great senior leadership, the bar has been set to have an anything but successful season.

Going into the season the team returns four starters, including scoring leader Garth Hamilton. Hamilton scored 12.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Along with Hamilton, the team’s leader in assists Trent Miller returns to give a healthy balance for Hamilton down low. With those two, Kevin Zoz and Bryan Borchers also return to the starting lineup. Wayne State transfer Tanner Ferguson joins the team to build depth on the bench.

Head coach Jim Sykes enters his ninth season as head basketball coach. Sykes guided the Mustangs to consecutive GPAC regular season championships in 2007-08 and 2008-09. He has a career record of 141-64 for a .687 winning percentage for the highest victory rate in school history. Coach Sykes could not be reached for comment.

The off-season went well, says sophomore basketball player Garrett Smith-Keller. “The team was focused all off-season and ready to get back out on the court after how last season didn’t end the way we were hoping.”

All summer the team worked out and played in games around the Midwest. The month leading up to the first practice, the team conditioned two times a week. The conditioning ranged from sprints on the track, all the way to running stadium stairs down at Olsen Stadium.

The GPAC conference should be very competitive once again this season. Last year’s regular season champion was Northwestern. “We should be right up there competing with the top dogs in the conference this season,” says freshman guard Angel Ung. The preseason polls haven’t been released yet but the favorites in the conference are Dordt, Northwestern, and Briar Cliff, just to name a few.

With all the preseason preparation in place and practicing just beginning, things are looking up. The team has all things in place to get back to be at top of the conference like they were back in 2008 and 2009. The team opens the season in York, Nebraska against York College November 4th, for the York Classic.

Suspect accidentally posts photo on Facebook via stolen phone

A Georgia man is a suspect in a car break-in. Police say a man who broke into the car took the cell phone sitting in the car, and went on to take a picture of himself. Little did the suspect know, the phone was set to send all pictures taken to be sent to Facebook.

The fact that the suspect would want to take a picture of himself on someones phone is very puzzling. Then to top it off the phone was set to send all pictures to Facebook just makes this a great ending to the story. This guy must feel like a real idiot now that his picture is everywhere on the web now. For more dumb criminals out there check out this website, America’s Dumbest Criminals .

That Darn Wind!

It’s a windy one outside today. Many people have made that apparent today with afternoon winds gusting up there.

Talking with Morningside student Sean Richardson he agrees with everyone about how its way too windy out there. He was hoping to go out this afternoon for a round of golf, but that dang wind is making it a frustrating afternoon. Richardson, who is a member of the golf team, says “summer is the best, its a perfect time of year golf.”

For the weather this afternoon other than the crazy wind, it was a nice temperature out. Looking at the glass half full, you can thankful there was no snow on the ground and it wasn’t below 32 degrees.

Red Sox collapse rocks a Nation’s foundation

Last night may have been one of the craziest nights in baseball history. There were two playoff spots on the line with one day of baseball left in the regular season. The Red Sox and Rays were tied for the final spot and the Cardinals and Braves were tied on the other side. The Cardinals won the NL side, while the AL side things got interesting. The Red Sox were up in the 9th and the Rays were down in the 9th. The Rays tied it and took it to extra innings, while the Red Sox blew the lead and gave up the winning run. The Rays ended up winning in extra innings. The Red Sox had one of the worst Septembers in team history and their game last night topped it all off.

There were many upset baseball fans wondering if the Yankees purposely threw the game against the Rays. The Yankees already clinched home field and were resting up for the playoffs. This collapse tops other memorable collapses by the Red Sox in the past. The Red Sox fans can blame the owners, the Yankees, and certain players. But when it comes down to it the Sox struggled in September and they didn’t really deserve it or act like they wanted it too badly.

Newt Gingrich Speaks at Morningside

Former speaker of the house Newt Gingrich was at Morningside College, in Sioux City, Iowa on Tuesday. He spoke in front of a crowd of roughly 150 people. The event was held in the Yockey room which almost every seat was full, consisting of college students and older people who were in support of Gingrich. There were no signs or music at the event which came as a surprise.

He spoke for about an hour and a half about what his plan is for the future if he is elected president. After giving a brief overview he opened it up to questions. He quoted “I don’t want people to be for me, but for people to be with me.” He mentioned how it will take eight years to get this nation turned back around and after he leaves its up to the citizens to carry on.

Gingrich plans on losing Obamacare and replacing it Today he is going to announce his new contract on his plan for the future. For more information regarding Newt Gingrich visit his website Newt.org. You can also follow him on Twitter @newtgingrich.

Most dislike latest Facebook changes

The past couple days Facebook has changed their layout once again. This change raised many users comments on saying enough is enough. This is the second time Facebook has switched in the past few months and users are getting fed up enough to stop getting on. Most feedback so far has been very negative. Changes include adding “Top Stories” based on how often a user logs in, and adding a news ticker with instant status updates from friends. Personally I don’t get on Facebook enough to care about the change but there are many differences to cause complaints and frustration. With the new Google+ recently coming out and Twitter becoming a hit, Facebook must think they need to keep changing things to please people. Little do they know they may be making things worse if they keep changing things. For more on the change view this article on the change Social Wars.

Hospital celebrates after conjoined twins separated

Dr. Max Langham spent all thirteen hours on August 29th separating Joshua and Jacob Spates. They were conjoined at their spines at birth and seven months in they had the surgery to separate them. “Most conjoined twins don’t ever get a chance to get to separation because they die from complications at delivery,” said Langham. Luckily this only occurs one time out of every 100,000 births. The two were luckily joined at the spine therefore they had a better chance of living on a normal life without many complications.

Myself being a twin I was fortunate enough to not be attached to my brother. But I could imagine it would make life a lot more difficult not being able to do everyday normal activities. From the doctors standpoint it would be a very nerve wrecking procedure to complete. For more information visit Conjoined Twins Facts.

Observation Paper

While walking around campus one place that sticks out to me on campus is the Rosen Voordern Sports Center, which is the home arena for basketball and volleyball matches. Along with that it has the athletic weight room, coaches offices and classrooms for teams to watch film in. It also houses the athletic training room for all athletes to use. The sports center was built in 1949 and the arena seats over 2,500 people. Not too many years ago Morningside College remodeled the front of the building in front of Allee Gym and built in new bathrooms, concession stands, and an alumni club room.

The exterior of the sports complex is solid brick all the way around, with glass front doors. It is located right on Peters Avenue right on the main drag of Morningside College. Students who attend the College have to be lost not to know where this historic building is located.  There is a cement sidewalk that goes all around the outside of the building. Inside on the second floor is the alumni clubroom, which recently was redone, and all trophies are put in that room, it is a pretty prestigious room. Then inside is Allee Gym which is the gym where basketball and volleyball games are played.

Once you enter Allee Gym, you can watch basketball games or volleyball matches reminds me a lot of my high school the way the gym is set up. While attending games in the past there, the crowd doesn’t too often get into it, its like a whole bunch of people just go watch but don’t feel like cheering at times unless it’s a big game. Seeing the place at full capacity is a sight to see but it rarely gets to full capacity. The smell of the place can get pretty stinky with sweaty athletes working out when you go up and visit the weight room or make your way by the locker rooms depending on what time of year it is.

The other night while watching the volleyball game, I began to observe the crowd, the players and the officials. While watching the crowd I immediately could tell not too many students knew what volleyball was or how it is played. But the sight of fans cheering really got the team going. Watching the officials is always entertaining also, sometimes they just look as if they are dozing off into space. You can hear the boos of the crowd when the officials made a bad call. You can see the excitement on the teams when something goes in favor of them.

Overall the Rosen Voordern Sports Center is one fantastic place to watch a sports venue. The wonderful people who live in Sioux City are always there to support their local College team at any sport that takes place. In the end if you are bored any night of the week or are just curious enough to go see what really happens inside of Allee gym go on over and check out all the wonderful things that go on.
