My Classmate Claire

When I first started talking with Claire DeRoin she didn’t have many exciting things to say about herself. I could instantly tell that I had to start getting more in depth with questions to find out more about Claire DeRoin. Claire is a junior at Morningside College majoring in corporate communications, she is from South Sioux City, Nebraska. If you ever see an Orange Neon driving around campus that will more than likely be Claire’s car. She came to Morningside because it was her last resort, she didn’t want to stay but stayed anyway.

Aside from going to school Claire works at Kohls and Pier 1, she also plays the organ at church. Her interests include shopping, and she will shop almost anywhere. Claire’s will listen to anything on the radio but refuses to listen to rap or country, her favorite shows are Big Bang Theory, and Sex and the City. When asked to pick between twitter and Facebook, she would tweet all day long rather than post on Facebook. Her favorite vacation spot would have to be California or New York. I’m sure they have some great places to shop at either of those locations.

For Claire’s future, she wants to work as an event planner. After meeting her if I ever need an event planned for myself or anyone I know, I would definitely look for her to plan my event. For more information on Claire, visit her about me on her blog.

For retired NFL players, most challenging ‘season’ just beginning

After reading this article I felt that my view on life has changed a little. This article was written by a former college and professional football player named Lamar Campbell. He had some eye opening facts about life after you take the pads off in the NFL. Most players after they retire from the NFL don’t really know how to handle themselves or know what the next step is because they have played football their entire life. Facts came out during the lockout this past year about life without football, the average life expectancy of a retired NFL player is 53-59 and the average NFL player is retired by 28. Within fives years of leaving three quarters of the players end up broke or divorced. These facts are not good to look at and Lamar and the NFL players association are now creating programs to help players transition better after they retire. Lamar wrote a pretty good article on the perspective on retired NFL players, and I found it very interesting to read. Yes some people in the World probably think this is not newsworthy because its about football players. But you can view it differently such as not many people know what to do after they get done with school and have difficult times

Campus Observation

While walking around campus one place that sticks out to me on campus is the Rosen Voordern Sports Center, which is the home arena for basketball and volleyball matches. Along with that it has the athletic weight room, coaches offices and class rooms for teams to watch film in. It also houses the athletic training room for all athletes to use. The sports center was built in 1949 and the arena seats over 2,500 people. Not too many years ago they remodeled the place and built in new bathrooms, concession stands, and an alumni club room.

Being in the arena watching basketball games or volleyball matches reminds me a lot of my high school the way the gym is set up. Previously while attending games there the crowd doesn’t too often get into it, its like a whole bunch of people just go watch but don’t feel like cheering at times unless it’s a big game. Seeing the place at full capacity is a sight to see but it rarely gets to full capacity. The smell of the place can get weird at times depending on what time of year it is and who was previously using it.

Ice Cream in Class

While sitting in journalism class the last thing I was expecting on a Thursday afternoon was to be served ice cream. But that’s is what indeed happened on this Thursday afternoon, the ice cream tasted like a root beer float in a small cup. Looking at it, I first thought that it was a normal chocolate and vanilla mixture in a cup. Once I tasted it though my initial thoughts on the look of it were wrong. The texture of it, i could tell it had been sitting out a decent amount of time by the slushiness of the ice cream, but I did not touch it. If I was to touch it, more than likely would have melted right off my hand. I couldn’t hear much while eating it, there was the occasional slush around while swirling the spoon around the cup. Overall the one afternoon of ice cream turned out to be very delicious.

Death Penalty Convictions Decreased in Broke Counties Nationwide

This article I found on FoxNews about more and more these days counties are giving people with death penalty just life in prison without parole, because it costs three times as much to execute someone than it is to let them rot in prison for the rest of their life. I looked at this from both viewpoints and there are many reasons to why its good and why its bad. It’s good because you save a lot more money from taxpayers, the downside is you are taking up space in prison for these people. Anymore these days defense attorneys are increasingly getting better and more skeptical juries. The article was written by Dan Springer and he does bring up some good points about about how over time things have changed. Peoples viewpoints have completely changed from years ago and that’s probably why the death penalty convictions have decreased.
