Couple Shoot

Yesterday night, a man shot his newly wed bride after she threw a plate of macaroni salad at him.

Richard and Laurette Brunson were married on the front porch of their home Saturday.

Which started off as a nice wedding, things escalated quickly. Richard shot Laurette with a .22 caliber handgun after she threw a plate of macaroni salad at him.

The couple moved into this neighborhood four or five months ago. Yet neighbor Michael Martin was completely surprised by this act of violence. (audio)

The bride had 3 children who all had to witness the incident with their own eyes. This was all Marilyn Corse, another neighbor, could think about. (audio)

By the time the police arrived, the groom was gone with his whereabouts still unknown.

According to hospital officials Mrs. Brunson is now in satisfactory condition.

One killed in Italy stabbing attack, soccer player among 4 wounded

This morning in Italy, a man had grabbed a knife and stabbed 5 people, killing one person and wounding the other 4. Among the wounded is Arsenal defender, Pablo Mari who is now on loan in Italy.

I found a video on Sky Sports and text on CBS News. Looking at their leads they were very similar, which is no surprise since the most important part here is the fact that 1 person died and 4 wounded. The video directly started with this fact, while the text started by saying that a man grabbed a knife from a shelf in a supermarket who then acted.

Another difference in the lead is that the video does not contain the fact that an arsenal player was involved in the stabbing, while the text did include this. The video mentioned the Arsenal player for the first time after talking about the suspect which had been arrested. After that however the reporter goes on about the soccer player for a longer period.

The stories do not have the same content as the text goes further into detail on the event itself. The text also talks more about Arsenal’s reaction on the incident. The video is shorter in general and talks about Pablo Mari for a longer time. They even mentioned a quote of the wounded player, showing that they had different sources. The text attributed a text from Arsenal’s social media page, something that is not possible in a short video.

The role of audio and sound was clearly visible here since the reporter was Italian and English was clearly not her first language. She made a couple of grammar mistakes while talking as well as being not perfectly understandable. Listening to the video did make it feel like she was more involved in the incident. More urgent and more emotional.

Stuart Scott’s heartwarming speech

Stuart Scott: ‘So, live. Live! Fight like hell!’, Jimmy V Perseverance Award, ESPYs.

Last night, Stuart Scott, a well known ESPN broadcaster, received the Jimmy V Perseverance award. An award given to a member of the sporting world who overcame big obstacles through perseverance and determination.

In his speech, Stuart talked about his battle with cancer. He pointed out multiple times that this fight is not an individual one, but one that is shared with thousands of people on twitter who support him, the amazing people from ESPN, his family, his friends.

“When you get too tired to fight then lay down and rest and let somebody else fight for you,” he said.

Further, Stuart quoted Jim Valvano, the man who the award got named after, “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up”. This is the moto which Scott now lives by. He will never stop fighting.

“When you die, that does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live and in the manner in which you live,” Stuart Scott said.

Stuart will keep fighting for his family, his two daughters who are his ‘heartbeat’. The best thing that ever happened to him. He ended his speech by calling up his only present daughter Sydni out of the audience to give him a hug because “I need one”.

Rafael Varane’s World Cup dream is revived

Saturday night, Rafael Varane got subbed off in the game against Chelsea due to injury with just 4 weeks until the start of the World Cup.

After lost hopes for the world cup, his dream got revived after MRI scans showed that the injury is not as bad as it first seemed. He could be sidelined for 3-4 weeks, meaning that he for sure will not come in action for the Reds anymore before the start of the tournament.

This means France nationals coach Didier Deschamps will have to make a decision regarding the center back before they reveil the final squad for the tournament on November 11. This because chances are that Varane will not be fit for their world cup Opening game.

The audience here are soccer fans all over the world. This was big news in the soccer world since Varane is not only a big name in the industry, but he is also part of France’s reigning World Cup champions team.

The lead is effective since it directly tells that the injury is not as bad as it was first feared. This is surprising news, since I, a fan that knows a lot about recent soccer news, did not even know this yet. It works as an attention grabber while at the same time providing just facts.

There is no point of view in this article, the writer only talks about what happened, giving facts and other known knowledge in the soccer industry.

This article contains all the necessary information to make a reader satisfied. I do not have any further questions regarding this news story after reading the article.

European vs American Schools

There is a world difference between the European and American school lives. Whether it is the grading system, after school activities or the lifestyle in general. Anyway, international students are destined for a culture shock. 3 Europeans that now study at Morningside were interviewed in an attempt to show the broadening of their horizon.

Danish Freshman Frederik just moved here this summer, meaning that he still remembers his first culture shock very clearly. He was mostly amazed by the amount of unused space here in the Midwest as well as the fact that all cities looked exactly alike.

Jurre, a sophomore from the Netherlands, and Maximilian, a sophomore from Germany, had a more developed view on the American lifestyle after having lived here for more than a year already. And still after this time, they both are still shocked about the amount of interest of Americans towards the rest of the world. This being based on classes and conversations which they had.

“Often people still ask me whether the Netherlands is its own country or part of another one,” Jurre laughed.

Jurre and Maximilian then also reassured Frederik that the fear of the language barrier is nothing to worry about.

“Once you get used to speaking English, it is very easy to adapt to everything,” Maximilian said from experience after struggling with the language his first semester.

Further, the format in which high schools give out their grades may seem similar to everyone, yet every country does it completely different. Where most countries use regular numbers, others, like the USA, use percentages. None of the Europeans, however, were surprised when asked about their reaction to finding out about the American grading systems since they watched many American movies before. When asked about their grading system Frederik simply answered: “You sure you want to know that?”

He then went on explaining the system, which has 7 possible grades: 12, 10, 7, 4, 2, 0 and -3, with the last being the lowest. Everything above a 2 is a passing grade. There are no possible grades other than these numbers. However, at the end of the year, the average is taken between your grades, where it can result in for example a 5. He then also directly acknowledged that the American grading system is “just better.”

Next, Jurre explained how the Dutch grading system worked, which he said was “much simpler” than the Danish system.

“In the Netherlands we have a grading system that goes from 1 to 10, where 1 is the lowest and 10 the highest grade. You will need to get a 5.5 to pass a class and everything lower will fail you the class,” Jurre explained.

He then went on by calling out his neighboring country Germany which, much like Denmark, “is not logic”. The German sophomore Maximilian took an attempt to explaining his home country’s system. He told that it goes from 6-1, with 1 being the highest possible grade and 6 the lowest.

Whereas these Europeans were not at all shock by the ‘new’ American grading system as it, “just makes sense” as said by Maximilian , they were more in shock with their fellow European country’s systems.

The Europeans were also asked to react on the fact that students play competitive sports at their schools. Maximilian loves this style since students are much more involved in their schools. He also added that he loves it because you can support your fellow students in other sports.

Jurre agreed with Maximilian, but was also quick to talk about the other part of this style.

“It is weird. We are used to playing with a team which we only see on the field. You went from only seeing them on the pitch, to never having a break from them, even when annoyed,” Jurre said.

He concluded his answer by stating the importance of keeping your emotions from the pitch separated from the emotions outside the field.

Whereas Maximilian and Jurre had to adapt to this new aspect of life, Frederik was used to it already. He told how many Danish students, including him, go to boarding schools in Denmark where all competitive sports are organized by their schools, just like in the United States.

Culture shocks happen in every new environment where one comes. For Frederik, Jurre and Maximilian this happened when they started their adventure in the USA. Where they already saw many differences compared to their home countries, their horizons will only keep broadening from this point on.

European vs American High Schools

There is a world difference between European and American high schools. Whether it is the grading system, after school activities or the way classes are put together. An American and 3 Europeans of different countries were interviewed in an attempt to explain their past situation.

An paragraph to shortly introduce the people who were interviewed, (Name and country)

The format in which high schools give out their grades may seem logic, until you arrive at a university where people from different countries come together. Where some countries use letters, others use percentages or just numbers in general.

Another complete difference is the after school activities which schools of the different countries provide. Whereas the fact that playing sports at a competitive level is arranged via the high schools is a life changer for some Europeans, others also do this in there home country.

Lastly, the way the schools are setup in general is also a massive difference. Not only does the amount of years differ from one country to another, the way the classes are put together as well.

I cannot type more than this yet as I have not interviewed the people yet, but I have had many talks about this in the cafeteria table which blew my mind.

I will ask 3 europeans and an American about these 3 situations in their high school. After each of these paragraphs already written I will describe their stories, mainly focused on the European high schools since the readers are Morningside students, who are almost all Americans. They would be shocked to read the differences since they do not know any of this.

Max Verstappen becomes 2 time World Champion

In the early morning of 9 October, Max Verstappen won the Formula 1 championship after another dominating performance in Japan.

He did this while matching the record of having 4 races to spare, with only Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel having done this before.

Whereas Max Verstappen won the race, he did not directly know he also already became world champion since the race got red-flagged. This means that limited points would be awarded to the winners because the race had les laps, this time due to the bad weather. Although the Suzuka race was red-flagged, it continued to a conclusion on track, so full points were awarded.

The audience in this case are F1 fans. Not even the biggest fans, but everyone who even just knows a little something about it who is interested to read about how the final race of the world champion went down. I think the bigger Formula 1 fans will look for other articles, talking more about the race itself as well as to just these ‘basic knowledge’ for them.

The lead of course is effective since it talks about how someone became a world champion. It is very clear what the article would be about. It is an easy and logic lead. It is factual and includes the who, what and where. It does not contain the when, but that could be because it is still so fresh as it happened this morning.

There is no point of view here as it only states facts about this season and last years season as well as quotes from Max Verstappen.

Lastly, it does not mis anything, everything is clear and it tells the reader all the basic information which it should know.

Interview: Pastore Andy Nelson

During class on Tuesday, the journalism class had the opportunity to interview Morningside’s Director of Campus Ministry, Pastor Andy Nelson.

Pastor Andy Nelson started his spiritual career with an internship at Saint Olive College in Minnesota, his home state. He then came to Sioux City to follow his wife who got offered a job at Morningside University. After a short period of working as the Pastor at the University of South Dakota, he came to Morningside in 2017 as soon as the position became open.

When asked what exactly his job as a Pastor is, he began listing many jobs and events which he helped or hosted on campus, at the end concluding it to:

“My job is to tend to the spiritual life of the Morningside Community.”

He also talked about his biggest influence. He then named the German Pastor, Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He was a part of the resistant movement against the Nazis back in World War II. He was such an influence for Pastor Nelson because he was one of the few who got in action against a group which he himself did not believe in.

Besides being a Pastor, Andy Nelson is a dad of 4 children. In his free time which is left from taking care of his kids he loves to read fiction, especially science fiction and fantasy novels. He also added that he now listens to audio books, allowing him to do multiple tasks at a time such as doing the dishes or driving his children to soccer practice. Also, Andy likes to fish and go dear hunting with his dad.

Further, Pastor Nelson got asked what he would tell his younger self if he would get the chance. He answered with a regret of something he did not do in the past:

“Take advantage of that time to step away and get a different sort of experience and let it be a part of your process of ‘what should i be?'”

Here he talked about a possible gap year which he wanted to take, but ended up not taking despite is burnout from the student life.
