Max Sickenberger is a Sophomore that plays in the Morningside Mustang’s soccer team and is clearly appreciated within the team.

“I love Max. He always gives a 100% and never has a day where he is turned off,” teammate, and roommate, Jurre Thielen said about him.

Much like many other teammates, Max left his home country Germany to travel across the world to start his own adventure. Max not only decided to study abroad because of the unique possibility to combine sports and academics here, but also to do his other hobby of travelling the world.

Whereas many people just love travelling, Max had a background story on where his passion for travelling began.

“My grandparents had a big impact of me. They took me to the USA and South Africa when I was young where I found my love for travelling,” Max said.

Max is a sports fanatic, which is why it does not come as a surprise that his other hobbies of him besides the obvious of playing soccer, include skiing and working out.

Niklas Gruener, a close friend of Max and a fellow German, was asked to describe Max in three words where he used funny, sarcastic, and honest.

“No matter when, there is always something to laugh about with him and sarcastic because when he says something, you never know if it is a joke or if it is serious,” Niklas said about why he chose these words and continued on why he chose honesty, “After games I would always go to him to ask how I played because he is one of the only ones that always gives me an honest answer.”

Rodrigo Della Giustina Pereira, Max’s roommate from last year who now lives back in Brazil, also got asked to describe Max. Whereas he stated that Max is definitely not the most organized roommate, he still misses living together with him.

“I don’t have any bad things to say about Max. He was the best roommate I could have ever asked for and I really miss this guy,” Rodrigo said.

Max also got asked to talk about his dream while growing up. He started off by saying that his dream was different than other kid’s dreams whilst growing up. He said that he had always dreamed of winning a lot of money in the lottery so he would not have to work.

“I would still not mind if this happened now,” Max concluded joking.

Homer, Midland Zoo’s Oldest Bear Dead

This morning, Homer, Midland Zoo’s 16 year old polar bear, passed away .

At 7 A.M. zookeeper Sara N. Getty found the bear floating in the pool of the exhibit. Homer was the oldest bear in general at the zoo.

“Homer was a very curious and playful polar bear and we will miss him terribly”, zookeeper Getty commented.

The cause of death is still unknown. The zoo is going to perform a necropsy to try and determine the cause which results will be available in several weeks.

“We will do everything in our power to determine how this bear died. Animal welfare and the preservation of species are our primary goals here at the zoo,” Midland Zoo director Chris P. Bacon said.

The other two polar bears, a 9-year-old named Yukon and a 10-year-old named McKenzie, were removed from the exhibit and are now being monitored by veterinary staff.

Polar bears have thrived at the zoo since 1985. Midland Zoo’s unique exhibit allows bear to engage in natural behaviors by playing in manufactured snow, digging in gravel and hunting trout in a chilled pool.

Brittney Griner freed in U.S.-Russia prisoner exchange

This morning, news came out that WNBA player Brittney Griner was released out of the Russian prison in exchange for a a Russian prisoner in the USA.

The high-level prisoner exchange saw Paul Whelan, an American jailed for nearly four years in Russia, go back to Russia.

Griner’s wife, Cherelle was in the oval office when she heard the news and thanks the people who had helped her free her wife.

This story is news because it is something that does not happens every day and it interests many people. Her imprisonment got much attention which is why many people are interested in reading about her release.

The audience are all these people who want to read about it. I would not be able to name the audience more specific.

The lead is effective as it directly tells the big news, that she got released. While it is the obvious thing to do of course, it is still a good lead. There is no point of view in this article and it only talks about facts and many quotes.

I do not think anything is missing, The article is long and includes everything.

Hi there, this is Marnix van Exel and you are listening to the Global News Podcast. Today we will be talking about the terrorist explosion in Istanbul, another injury case just a week before the World Cup in Qatar, and the midterm election results.

14 November, At least 6 people were killed with 81 wounded in an explosion in Istanbul.

The explosion happened on a shopping street in the Taksim Square area. The city’s governor Ali Yerlikaya said that a suspect has been arrested.

Turkish President Recep Erdogan earlier said “the smell of terror” was in the air.

A female reportedly sat on a bench for more than 40 minutes and left just minutes before the explosion took place.

Whereas no organization has claimed this attack yet, it is suspected that the terrorist organization called the Kurdistan Workers’ Party is responsible. They are calling for an independent Kurdish state within Turkey.

German Morningside student Niklas Gruener reacted to this shocking news within his fellow European country.

Niklas Gruener talks.

Now on sports news. Just a week before the start of the World Cup, Dutch Right-Back Denzel Dumfries had to leave his last club game early.

Inside the closing 20 minutes of his game with Inter Milan, the player had to come off the field with what appeared to be a knee injury.

Where Dumfries would be an important member of the Netherlands’ squad, it is now the question whether he will be fit in their opening game against Senegal in seven days’ time.

Dutch Morningside soccer player Jurre Thielen talked about the importance of Dumfries to this Dutch National team.

And lastly, the democrats have held the majority in the US Senate after midterms election results have been counted.

Republicans are furious. Critics blame former President Donald Trump as well as Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnel for the poor showing.

For now the race for the US House Of Representatives remains uncalled, but the Republicans are favored to win.

Normally, the party controlling the White House loses seats in a midterm election. The Democrats’ proved history different. Their performance this year is considered the best for a sitting party in at least 20 years.

I asked Anders Staxen, a political science major for a reaction.

Germany suffer humiliation of second straight World Cup group stage exit

Despite a win over Costa Rica today, Germany got knocked out in the group stage for the second World Cup in a row.

In a entertaining game for the neutral spectator, Germany went up 1-0 in the first half to later be stunned by two Costa Rica goals in the second half. Substitutes Kai Havertz(2) and Niclas Fullkrug afterwards scored again to seal the victory. However, Japan’s 2-1 win over Spain meant that Germany was out despite their own game.

The audience is the whole soccer world since the match day included controversy moments, shocking results and a shocking exit of a good team. Many requirements for something to be worth calling news.

The lead is effective as it also states, and reminds the football world, that this was not just one shocking exit, but that it was for the second World Cup in a row. There is some kind of perspective of the author since the article uses words such as ‘humiliating’ and ‘remarkable’.

Whereas this is a short article, and therefore missing some information which many soccer supporters would already know anyways, I saw that ESPN also already had multiple articles on this match day and therefore would not repeat themselves in the different articles.

The World’s First Footlong Cookie

The news is that Subway produced the world’s first footlong cookie in the world, and less important is that it will only be available on national cookie day. The audience is whoever is interested in this story or gets influenced by this news such as investors. The benefit to the reader is gaining this information, maybe now wanting to go and buy this enormous cookie. The benefit to subway is purely advertising their new product. It gains publicity in a hope that people will buy the product when the day comes.

Of course, this is the first time I read a story regarding an enormous cookie. But otherwise, it is also the first story that I respond to that makes the story with the purpose of advertising their product. The normal stories I read give information to the reader to entertain or to learn something new.

The haunted basement of the Klinger-Neal Theatre

Last semester, me and my friends went to the basement of the Klinger-Neal Theatre right here on campus. Rumors were that it was haunted, which none of us believed, which gave us only one mission. We had to check it out for ourselves.

One day after dinner in the cafeteria, we went to check the unlocked building out. None of us had ever been here. It was dark and creepy, much like any dark building. We quickly found the door to the basement. A heavy door that directly slammed shut behind us when we entered. Unlike the movies, we could luckily still open it from the inside as well.

In the basement, I directly  grabbed ahold of a friends shirt, just to be sure. Besides the noises of the machine in the back, it was silent. If something on this campus would be haunted, this would definitely be the place.

There were the most random items, big clocks, puppets and other decorations used for plays in the theatre. We turned around a corner and were scared to death, a costume which reached to the ceiling was standing there staring us down while leaning against the wall.

Me, scared to death was just making sure I would remain in the middle of the group. Not in the front nor the back. We looked further for the one object we actually came for, the haunted chair. I heard stories that as soon as people touched the chair, fingernails scraped along their back, grabbing their shoulders and more.

We came to back and there we spotted it. A dead-normal chair which we use in classrooms standing there by itself it the corner. Whereas I tried to laugh it off since I was not expecting this exactly, I was still scared to death.

After standing there for some minutes with a safe distance, we quickly walked back up, not being sure what to think. Whereas we were proud of ourselves for being brave enough to go down there, we also all felt something was not right down there.

The quality of time

Waiting 18 hours at the Chicago Airport while flying to the USA by yourself for the first time. That is what Nienke van Drunen could withstand because of her quality of patience.

Last summer, while traveling from the Netherlands to Sioux City, Nienke had a 18 hour layover in Chicago. Family friends of hers allowed Nienke to use their Air Miles while booking her flight. While it were a lot of Air Miles, it was not enough to book both flights. Resulting in having to buy two separate tickets.

There would only be one non-expensive option so that Nienke would not miss her layover. Wait 20 hours in Chicago. Whereas she was lucky the waiting time changed to ‘just’ 18 hours, she would find out it would be terrible.

She had to wait in the cold lobby overnight since she could not check in her suitcases until the day of her flight. For 14 hours, Nienke could not get new food or sleep.

‘It was the first time I was awake for more than 45 hours’ Nienke concluded.

Messi scores in Argentina’s World Cup warm-up

Argentina warmed up for the World Cup with a 5-0 win over the Unites Arab Emirates Wednesday night in Abu Dhabi.

Two goals from Angel Di Maria and goals from Julian Alvarez, Lionel Messi and Joaquin Correa extended their unbeaten run to 36 games.

Midfielder Rodrigo De Paul said they are confident, while also taking precaution:

“But for many it will be their first World Cup so the first game will be very important,” De Paul said.

Argentina will open their World Cup adventure against Saudi Arabia on Nov. 22 before also playing against Mexico and Poland in Group C.

The audience are soccer supporters getting ready for the world cup. The lead is too long in my opinion. I do not think it has to include the goal scorers. But if you take that away the lead works and includes everything what it needs to include.

It does not have a point of view normally, however people could argue that the a “superb goal” could be of a point of view since people could have different meanings of what a superb goal, maybe based on the qualities of different people when it comes to soccer. But besides this one term there is no point of view as the article just talks about the game.

This article does not miss anything, while it even talks about why some players were not listed on the roster today.

Dutch coach Louis van Gaal also came with more news regarding the squad. He revealed that Barcelona striker Memphis Depay would not be starting in the nation’s world cup opener due to his ongoing injury.

If Mr. Biden does decide to run again, he will likely rematch Trump who is believed to announce his running for President this Tuesday.
