During class on Tuesday, the journalism class had the opportunity to interview Morningside’s Director of Campus Ministry, Pastor Andy Nelson.

Pastor Andy Nelson started his spiritual career with an internship at Saint Olive College in Minnesota, his home state. He then came to Sioux City to follow his wife who got offered a job at Morningside University. After a short period of working as the Pastor at the University of South Dakota, he came to Morningside in 2017 as soon as the position became open.

When asked what exactly his job as a Pastor is, he began listing many jobs and events which he helped or hosted on campus, at the end concluding it to:

“My job is to tend to the spiritual life of the Morningside Community.”

He also talked about his biggest influence. He then named the German Pastor, Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He was a part of the resistant movement against the Nazis back in World War II. He was such an influence for Pastor Nelson because he was one of the few who got in action against a group which he himself did not believe in.

Besides being a Pastor, Andy Nelson is a dad of 4 children. In his free time which is left from taking care of his kids he loves to read fiction, especially science fiction and fantasy novels. He also added that he now listens to audio books, allowing him to do multiple tasks at a time such as doing the dishes or driving his children to soccer practice. Also, Andy likes to fish and go dear hunting with his dad.

Further, Pastor Nelson got asked what he would tell his younger self if he would get the chance. He answered with a regret of something he did not do in the past:

“Take advantage of that time to step away and get a different sort of experience and let it be a part of your process of ‘what should i be?'”

Here he talked about a possible gap year which he wanted to take, but ended up not taking despite is burnout from the student life.
