Racist Incident

During a friendly game between Brazil and Tunisia on Tuesday night a banana got thrown at the Brazilian soccer player Richarlison. His club captain Harry Kane now also responded to the incident, describing it as ‘unacceptable’.

Richarlison posted on social media that FIFA had to make firm punishments for this incident or it would keep happening. Kane agreed and added:

“I hope FIFA can be strong and find out who done it, making sure the right consequences are made.”

Richarlison’s club coach Antonio Conte also had something to say regarding the incident, believing that the best thing to do was to give this fan a football ban for life.

Further, Kane goes on about the fact he is happy to play alongside Richarlison at Tottenham.

The lead includes the who, what, where and when. However, I do not think the when was important in this story, saying it was in Paris. For the rest it is a good lead, nothing attention grabbing, but all the information it needs.

The audience this time is greater than just the soccer audience, as racism goes beyond soccer. Racism is a no go, especially in sports, any readers who see the title ‘racist incident’ could be interested in the story.

There is no point of view anywhere in the article. It only contains quotes, paraphrased text and other facts.

It does not miss anything, the article even contains Richarlison’s post game interview in which he reacts to the banana being thrown at him.

Issues of racism in FIFA/international soccer have been going. on for years. The banana on the field thing is getting tired. Considering the depth of racism across Europe, I can’t imagine there is an answer other than to cancel games, or just walk out as some teams have done. As you say, keeping it in the public eye is important, but expecting a solution is likely beyond FIFA.
