https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/college/acc/university-of-miami/article245846650.html

This article is about the football game last Saturday between the Miami Hurricanes and the Louisville Cardinals. The article starts by talking about how fun the team looks this year, and includes a quote from their head coach talking about how excited the team was tonight while giving props to Louisville for being a good team. The writer then gives off some individual stats, including notable performances form both teams. After that, the writer finishes off with an in depth game summary, including many notable plays.

I think this article is a very well written one. I really like when a local paper for one team includes the stats for both teams. I am also a fan of how they included a recap of every big play, which gives you a very good summary of the game if you did not watch it. I also like sports articles when they include quotes from a coach or player, which this article did. This is about as good as it gets as a sports recap in my opinion.

https://ragincajuns.com/news/2020/9/12/football-louisiana-stuns-no-23-iowa-state-31-14-in-ames.aspx

This article talks about the upset victory the University of Louisiana-Lafayette had on September 12th against Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. The Rajun’ Cajuns won the game 31-14, which shocked many as the AP 23rd ranked Cyclones were the favorite to win. The article goes over a game summary explaining the major plays and stats that went on during the game, including a punt return and kickoff return for touchdown for the Cajuns that ended up resulting in a win for the team.

I think this article is very well written. Coming from the ULL site, most articles could be biased. However, this article seems very unbiased, and even notes the scoring plays from the Cyclones. If one was not able to watch the game but wanted a brief recap of the game, this article is a perfect example of what someone would be looking for.

Interview Jacob Murphy

In my interview with Jacob Murphy regarding the approach to the COVID-19 virus at Morningside College, one thing was clear: he wasn’t necessarily thrilled with how the college has handled everything so far.

Jacob thinks that the school is handling it poorly, but he says he seems like they are trying to even “do too much” at times. He said: “The school is trying to control everything, when in reality they aren’t really controlling anything.”

He was also unhappy with the quarantine policy at the school. Jacob is not a fan of the rule of mandatory quarantine if you have been exposed to someone who has tested positive, even if you are wearing a mask. He later goes on to say “if we are having to quarantine while wearing masks in class, what is the point of wearing masks?”

Article 1 Reflection

1. Which part of the process for paper #1 did you put the most effort into? Which part of the process do you wish you had spent more time on?

I think the part I put the most effort into was revising my article. It was hard for me to be able to cut down some of my paragraphs and also implement more research to give more information to the reader.

I wish I spent more time researching beforehand.

2. What was the *most* difficult part of writing this paper?

As I somewhat stated in question 1, the hardest part was revising my paper. I had a difficult time figuring out what to take out of my article to make it more condensed, even when I thought everything in my first draft was relavent to the topic.

3. What was the biggest problem you encountered in writing this paper, and how successful were you in solving that problem?

The biggest problem I had was involving more than one source into the article. I would read one source and want to include everything into the article, but then I would read the next source and want to do the same thing.

Article 1 Final

The NBA season has been well underway, and there has not been any COVID-19 cases within the league in the isolated “bubble” where players live and play 24/7.

The National Basketball Association decided to resume their season on July 30 from Orlando, Florida in a bubble where players and staff of the organization are not allowed to leave. There has been zero positive COVID-19 tests in the campus at Walt Disney World.

These players had to adhere to multiple rules before entry into the bubble. Everyone coming to the bubble had to quarantine seven days prior to coming to the Orlando Bubble. They must be cleared by a physician to show they have zero risks to their health for COVID, and have not shown symptoms of the virus. Testing upon arrival is also required to enter the bubble, as well as regular testing throughout their stay in Orlando.

According to NBC Sports, there has been 341 players from the league tested regularly for COVID-19 since the bubble period has started. The NBA has proven that even during a pandemic, their system is working and may be the only way that sports are going to work until the global pandemic is over.

Even once the season started, some players left the bubble to deal with personal, family, or other matters. However, none of this has impacted the safety of the players inside the bubble. The next step in the process was allowing family members to join the players at the bubble, starting on August 30.

The NBA players were allowed one family member, spouse, or close friend into the bubble. With over 360,000 confirmed COVID cases in the state of Florida, per Yahoo Sports, both the players and their families are considered safer inside the bubble than they would be outside of the bubble.

Comparing the Orlando bubble to other leagues, the MLB (Major League Baseball) has decided to continue travels for their teams, and have ran into problems with teams getting infected throughout the season. This has caused games to be postponed, and teams to take multiple weeks off to quarantine due to players being infected by COVID. In an ESPN article, San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich said “I think it’s a great example for our country” when talking about the NBA bubble.

The league has proven that a bubble atmosphere has worked out better than any other situation so far during the pandemic. While there is still games to be played, and a playoff finish between the remaining teams, this has shown that the bubble is far better at keeping stability than any other situation. This will be interesting to watch upcoming fall leagues such as the NFL, and see their approach to the matter.

Observation Assignment

It is a rather chilly, Sunday night at the Mustang Grille. There is a decent amount of people here considering the fact that it is 9:30 p.m. There is a group of men’s soccer players gathered around the largest table in the room. They are quietly having conversation while some are eating, some are on their laptops, and some are sitting at the table either waiting for their food, or not eating at all. There is another group of four boys, presumed to be baseball players based on their Morningside Mustang caps that three of them are wearing. There are a few students at the grille sitting by themselves. One girl by herself is typing away on her laptop while sitting at the bar area in the grille. Another girl is eating what appears to be chicken tenders while looking at her computer screen, possibly studying or doing homework. There are two workers on hand currently. Both of them are males, and both of them are wearing blue shirts with the Sodexo logo on them. One worker is taking the orders of people who show up sporadically. The other worker is making the food and bringing it up to the front counter. Whenever he finishes an order, he calls out the name of whoever ordered the food into a microphone. His voice sounds very deep and almost intimidating on the loud microphone.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/patrick-mahomes-chiefs-receive-super-bowl-rings-in-unique-championship-ceremony/

This article talks about how the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs received the championship rings recently, but not in the normal fashion. The team was socially distanced throughout the field, and handed their rings one by one by the owner Clark Hunt. The writer then goes on to talk in detail about the rings, and explaining every little detail within those rings. The most interesting part of the ring is the 50 diamonds that surround the logo, representing the 50 years between Super Bowl titles for the Chiefs. The article then gives a brief paragraph on the Chiefs’ quest to repeat a championship.

I think the article is well written, and very informational. An article like this could get by with a few paragraphs talking about who got the rings and what the players had to say about it, but the writer went into detail of what the rings actually represent and what is in store for the team next.

Firefighter Saves Cat, Injures Self

One tree at 102 11th Ave. resulted in a broken leg of firefighter Bob Harwood.

A Calico cat belonging to Suzanne and Samantha Decker climbed 50 feet up in an oak tree, causing the fire station to come to the resuce.

Bob Harwood climbed up 50 feet to retrieve the cat, but on his way down a limb broke at approximately 15 feet. This resulted in a broken leg for Harwood and he was transported to St. Luke’s hospital.

Harwood is doing “just fine” at St. Luke’s Hospital in South Iowa. As for the cat, it is doing fine also- it landed on top of Bob in the fall.

Gasoline Truck Causes Flooding

A Texaco gasoline truck caused major problems on 48th and Correctionville Rd this week.

The truck overturned, causing gas floods throughout the area. Four families were evacuated because of the gas. The gas ended up in the streets and ditches as well, causing cars to be rerouted through side streets.

The situation was serious for two hours until the gas was flushed away by firemen. Fire Chief Charles Hochandel says: “The firemen followed catastrophe and hazmat procedures set up beforehand for just such an occurence.” The result was a safe incident with no injuries.

Deadly South Iowa #2

A two car crash yesterday morning resulted in the death of 65 year old Moyer Quick.

Quick, a Sioux City native, was driving with his wife Dorothy, and her sister Maxine Steuerwald two miles east of Sioux City on Highway 28 when the vehicle collided with a truck driven by Randy Radin, 17, of Swan Lake.

The three survivors were transported by ambulance to Sioux City General Hospital after the crash. Dorothy has since been released from the hospital. Maxine is scheduled to be released, and Radin is in critical condition with a fractured skull and internal injuries.

Patric Stewart, a South Iowa highway patrolman, said both vehicles were heading west on the two-lane highway. Quick was passing Radin but his rear-end struck Radin while completing the pass, sending both vehicles into the ditch on the north side of the road. An autopsy later showed that Moyer had a heart attack, which may have caused the accident.
