Planning to Fly? You’ll Need This ID.

For years, the government has warned travelers they will need a security-enhanced Real ID to board domestic flights, and for years the requirement has been delayed. Now they mean it.

I chose a different article to read for this week. It was interesting to read because I plan to travel during the summer and when I stumbled upon it I figured I should read about the ID I would need to carry.

The article talked about a new enhanced real ID required to board domestic flights. This means only flights within the united states. International flights will still require passports.

Beginning May 3, 2023, this new rule will be enforced. If you plan to fly in the United States you may show your passport or the new enhanced ID for verification. A regular state ID will NOT work.

A real ID is a diverse license or identification card with a special seal. It signifies that the seal has been screened and approved.

Why? According to the article, after the 911 attack, there were many fraudulent IDs”s and “the federal government began an effort to tighten national standards for state-issued documentation” Congress did pass the Real ID act in 2005 and was initially set to be enforced as of 2008.

All 50 States are now issuing the Real IDs. Each state does have different procedures and requirements in order to apply for a real ID and could get more information on that through the DMV website of each state.

The article overall was very informative and it gave me a great understanding of what is to come when flying within the United States.

I think it also had a good lead and it made me want to keep reading more about the new real enhanced ID.

Jaden Carney’s argumentative story…

During Jaden’s senior year of High School, he was an intern in the state capital of Des Moines. His 4H( Head, Heart, Hands, and Health) leader scheduled an important meeting. She feared that no one would show up and the conference would not be worth it. As time passed by, students started to arrive. Jaden later contacted his leader, attempting to discuss what had occurred before the meeting began. They discussed better meeting times and how they are worth it. After working things out with his 4H leader he learned to talk to people before is better than trying to pick fights with them. He also learned that it was more of a simple misunderstanding than what he made it to be.

Media Comparison

Article: https://www.siouxlandproud.com/news/local-news/documents-reveal-a-third-victim-in-west-side-shooting/

Video: https://www.siouxlandproud.com/video/two-dead-after-early-morning-shooting/8115916/

The article lead for this story was “A shooting on the west side of Sioux City resulted in two deaths, additional documents say there was a third victim involved during the altercation.”

The video lead for the story was “An investigation is underway after two were killed in an early morning shooting in sioux city.”

I think that the video tells us more information about what time the shooting happened, where, and how many were involved. The article does tell us where, and how many were involved but it does not tell us an approximate time of day the altercation occurred.

I think both the video and the article were short as far as length. The video told more information in less time and the article told the basic information needed for the story.

The video was much more interesting to watch because it showed what the house looks like at the current moment and gives a visual of where the altercation occurred. The article didn’t have a picture of the house but it did have a picture of the suspect and it helps to put a face to the name.

I think that both the article and the video had good visuals but I did like the video better, it was more interesting.

‘A New Frontier’ for Hearing Aids

Over-the-counter hearing aids are coming at long last. But lower prices and greater accessibility may take time to materialize.

This article had some great information about the new access to hearing aids. It spoke about having the ability to get hearing aids over the counter for an affordable price.

Some corporations like Best Buy are planning on having a hearing station that allows their customers to conduct a hearing test and buy hearing aids that are suitable for their needs.

I liked the information that this article provided. It was a long article though and it felt like there was some unneeded information and repetition. The main points were definitely at the top.

I also think that some of the information towards the bottom should have been closer to the top following the inverted pyramid method. It would have been a faster read and more information could be gained.

Overall, I think it was a good article with lots of information on the topic. I am glad that hearing aids are starting to become more accessible.

Commuters at Morningside University share an insight into the pros and cons of being a commuter.

A student that does not live on campus grounds and drives to school daily is considered a commuter. Most commuter students live in-state, as a result, qualifying them as commuters.

Being a commuter comes with significant advantages, according to most students. Andrea Balderas shares her convenience, “Being a commuter allows me not to be homesick or miss out on family events.”

Commuting helps reduce college costs as well. “Not having to pay the 10k for room and board is awesome. I still get to sleep in my bed and have my room that requires no sharing,” said Lupita DeAnda.

However, there are disadvantages to a commuter’s life. Myrka Gomez said, “Parking is a big issue, and not being involved or engaged in college is what helps build those relationships.”

Being a commuter leaves little time for activities and gatherings. Most of the time, a commuter does not find out when events are and when they do, commuters can’t make the time because of their busy schedules. Lupita DeAnda states. “It’s hard to stay in the loop of what goes on campus, especially with two jobs and siblings to look after. “

Students and staff often forget that commuters who have lived in-state continue to live their typical lives with their families. Their families still require attention and help, generating a possible disadvantage.

Commuters not only help their families when needed but also spend a lot of time driving to and from school and face weather complications throughout the year.
These commuters would like to foresee lower tuition costs or possibly a commuter scholarship to help with extra financial expenses. “Having a parking spot for just commuters would help tremendously, especially if placed in a location where you can get to any building,” stated Andrea Balderas.

Although commuters don’t get the entire ‘college experience,’ they prefer to stay as commuters. Myrka Gomez said, “I would not like to live in the dorms. I enjoy having my apartment and parking even if that means managing my time wisely to get things done.”

Even if life is challenging for a commuter, they would prefer the extra stress instead of living on campus for the college experience. Lupita DeAnda states, “there are many cons to commuting, but viewed as the best option for students, so don’t be discouraged; we all struggle in our ways commuting or not. “

Hello, Fellow Car. We’ve Got a Problem. Let’s Talk.

A system called C-V2X — cellular vehicle-to-everything technology — will allow vehicles to communicate with each other, with a goal to save lives in the process.

Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything technology -shorthand for C-V2X. This technology allows vehicles to communicate with each other and pedestrians, cyclists, and construction workers via wearable sensors or smartwatches.

  • Highway workers: Will be alerted when vehicles are getting too close to them.
  • School Bus Drivers: Warned against letting children off if a vehicle fails to stop.
  • Cyclists & Drivers: Will be aware of each other before possible collisions.

The C-V2X test vehicles detected stopped school buses, vehicles running a red light, construction workers in the roadway, and cyclists in blind spots or turning in front of a car.

These alerts could be displayed on the vehicle’s instrumental panel, a handheld device, or a smartphone. Emergency braking is also easy for a car manufacturer to incorporate into the C-V2X system.

“Because the human attention span is decreasing, you’ll look for these technologies to save your life,” said Ram Iyer.

I think that the Lede for this article was eye-catching. It made me want to know more and I was interested that it was about car technology.

When reading the article I wished that there was more detail as to what it actually did and what made it stand out from other car technology out there.

The author covered some good points I was just left wanting to know more information about C-V2X. It did not make me understand how it really worked.

The Dollar is Strong. That is Good for the U.S. but Bad for the World. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/26/business/economy/us-dollar-global-impact.html

According to New York Times, the British pound has touched a record low against the dollar. The value of the dollar is causing economic turmoil in rich and poor nations. Starvation is a greater problem for Nigeria and Somalia because of the strong dollar it is pushing up the price of fuel, food, and medicine.

“For the rest of the world it is a no-win situation.” – Eswar Prasad

The dollar is the worlds currency. Energy and food tend to be baught and sold in dollars. According to the international monetary fund, 40% of the worlds transactions are done in dollars. The dollar is beating other currency like, the Brazilian Real, the South Korean Won, and the Tunsian Dinar.

Currently there are supply chain chokeholds because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russian invasion on Ukraine, climate disasters, and food and energy supply. American buyers are getting a bargain because of the high dollar value, this means that the worse things get, the more people buy dollars.
