Media Comparison/News Comment #8

Posted at 10:30 pm under News Comments

I chose to do a media comparison on how Hal Steinbrenner is planning to keep Aaron Boone as the Yankees manager. I got the print article from the Associated Press and the video from the New York Post.

Both of the media types use Hal Steinbrenner in their lead. This is because he is the one who makes the decisions for the Yankees since he is the chairman and managing general partner of Yankee Global Enterprises, which owns the New York Yankees. The video version of the story uses a quote as the lead to get the topic introduced while the print version does not. Then, the print version goes on to talk about some details on other teams and injuries, while the video version focuses more on Boone and the Yankees GM, Brian Cashman, and if they are coming back together or not.

Both the print article and the video are fairly short. The print version has a little bit more detail. The video version is like a conversation with some analysts all talking about the same topic.

The print version uses many quotes from Hal Steinbrenner himself and then the video uses some quotes citing the content from the Associated Press which is the print article.

I noticed that the role of sound and video portrayed a different kind of mood. For example, I read the print version first and then found a video about the topic. The print version seemed more informative with quotes while the video version mixed in facts as well as the reporter, Andy Martino’s opinion on the issue. The video seemed a bit more subjective to me.

One thing I found interesting was that the article under the video didn’t really follow what the video had to say. The video was much more specific which must’ve meant that they felt like the information they covered was the most important.

I wouldn’t call the Post story a video. It is definitely a conversation. This seems really popular for sports, at least for the last 10 years, of know-it-all jocks sitting around talking sports. For it to work you have to believe the dudes know what they’re talking about.

The difference in the story below the video is that it was written by a reporter. Possibly for the paper, but more likely for the Post website. The video is of post reporters talking among themselves (I assume). I don’t recognize any of them, but that doesn’t mean much. A reader could do both, or maybe just read.
