Deion Sanders is leaving Jackson State to Coach in Colorado.

Sanders is doing what many college football coaches aspire to do. He had success at a smaller school and was offered an opportunity at a bigger school so he took it.

This decision doesn’t sit right with some people. Sanders was previously at Jackson State University, a historically black institution. Sanders made it seem possible that black coaches were getting more opportunity, historically black schools would gain more respect, and that the best African American players would start going to HBCU’s. After his departure, these thoughts started to dwindle. Sanders is going to start bringing his recruits to his bigger school of course, dragging them away from the previous HBCU.

This is news because Deion Sanders was a professional athlete that turned into a coach, so people know of him. Many football fans know of his success as a coach and the style of coaching that makes him successful. This is also news because it affects the perception of top athletes going to HBCU’s. Sanders had a great influence for that but now he is gone. The news values covered would be impact, prominence, and human interest.

I get why some people are complaining, but as you say, it’s what coaches do. Would people be complaining as loudly if it was a white coach making the move?
