The Yankees Have No Answer for an Ageless Astros Ace.

In order for the Yankees to win the American League pennant, they are going to have to beat Justin Verlander, who is in the running for the Cy Young Award this year. Verlander may go down in history as one of the best pitchers ever, even after coming back from Tommy John Surgery on his elbow.

In Verlander’s first face off against the Yankees in the ALCS, he struck out 11 over 6 innings and recorded the win.

“He’s not only physically strong, which you can see, but he’s mentally strong,” said Astros Manager Dusty Baker.

Jameson Taillon, the Yankees starting pitcher who faced Verlander, gave his best effort, trying to keep things close, but he couldn’t outlast Verlander.

The Astros manager hands the ball to left-hander Framber Valdez to face the Yankees for game 2 of the ALCS Thursday night to try and repeat the outcome.

This is news because of timeliness. Post-season baseball only happens once a year so everyone is paying attention. This is also news because of proximity. Fans in New York and Houston might be interested in their home teams during the MLB playoffs. Lastly, this is news because of human-interest for all of the everyday baseball fans who watch baseball on TV and who attend the games in person.

The playoffs and world series will always be news. It’s the only time some people — like me — pay attention to baseball. It’s too bad it’s the Yankees and Astros, however.
