A Rough Prep for France ahead of the World Cup

This week is the last international break before the start of the World Cup in Qatar. Here France will try to become the first reigning champion to retain their title since Brazil in 1962. However, France is now going through a rough time where many things are going wrong.

Beginning with star player Kylian Mbappe continuing his fight against the French Football Federation (FFF) about the players’ image rights agreement. After already complaining about it it March, Mbappe now decided to take no part in activities and photoshoots organized by the national team’s sponsors. This resulted in a bad atmosphere in the team.

The FFF’s president Noel Le Graet is also under fire after being accused of sending inappropriate messages to female coworkers over the years. The 80 year old is urged, but refuses to step down, again building pressure around the team’s squad.

Next, Paul Pogba is currently under police protection as old friends and his brother tried to extort money from him. These people are now in jail, but Pogba is still surrounded of this trauma as well as being out with a torn miniscus.

At last, there are many minor injuries in France’s normal starting line-up at the moment. Whereas they are mostly small injuries, they can always effect a player’s form.

For soccer fan’s, the main audience, this is a very interesting article. Besides the fact that France is always a favorite at any big tournament, they are also the reigning World Champions. As a soccer fan I knew they had not been performing at their best lately, however it was never very clear why.

In my opinion, the lead is not very effective. It introduces the topic by asking a question, but it does not say anything about it further. The title does tell where the story is about, but then still, the lead also does not contain an attention grabber of any sort.

There is some sort of point of view, but very little. I say it like that because the writer talks a lot about how much things are going wrong. Where I know as well these are negative things, others would maybe think of this as an average story and that the team does not have to worry. Also, looking at their most recent results, it is even a fact that things are not going good.

For the rest, the article is very much fact-giving and explains the difficult situation which the French squad is in now.
