Amber Guyger a female officer faces manslaughter. Guyger entered  Botham Jeans apartment thinking it was hers after coming home from work. While she was still in uniform she opened up the door which was unlocked and it was pitch black in the apartment and she saw a shadow of someone. Guyger pulled out her gun and shot Jean three times. A co council member is now saying she shot him because he was black.

CNN had a good lead to the story. It really drew me in and I ended up reading the whole news article. I find it interesting that Amber thought that it was her apartment even though her key did not fit in the door. But I do not think she shot Jean just because he was black. I think she shot him because she thought someone broke in her apartment.

Final Draft

With the new NFL season underway, Nike is causing controversy in addition with recent sponsorship with Colin Kaepernick previous actions.

Nikes Dream Crazy Campaign had gotten a lot publicity because Kaepernick is the face of it. In the campaign Kaepernick reads “Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything,” This quote refers to his kneeling protest over social injustice. The publicity, however is both positive and negative.

Nike’s decision to sponsor Kaepernick resulted in loss of many customers. Some people are even burning and throwing away Nike gear because of Kaepernick’s involvement.

A news article form Bustle talked about how people are boycotting Nike gear. Numerous social media users, upset about the campaign post pictures on social media showing Nike gear being ripped up and burned.

A famous country singer, John Rich, tweeted a picture of cut up socks and captioned it “Our Soundman just cut the Nike swoosh off his socks. Former marine. Get ready @Nike multiply that by millions.”

Despite the backlash against the campaign there are many positive outcomes to Kaepernick’s roll. Pittsburgh Post- Gazette defends Kaepernick’s previous actions stating that he has the right to sit during the anthem.

The freedom to express an opinion is one of the many reasons this country is the greatest in the world. This freedom of expression and how unpopular it is makes the campaign so monumental.

A Quinnipiac University poll showed voters approves of Nike’s decision to feature Kaepernick in its latest ad campaign, 49 percent to 37 percent. The poll also found a distinct age gap, with those 18 to 34 approving of Nike’s decision by a 67-21 margin, while voters 65 and older disapproved of the decision, 46 to 39 percent.

Highway patrol ordered yesterday, ban hand- held radar guns because troopers could develop cancer in Des Moines Iowa.

Concerns that troopers could develop cancer from longterm exposure to the radiation waved emitted by the devices. The ban was ordered as a precaution while studies are conducted into the possible links between cancer and the use of such guns.

It comes two months after three municipal officers in Cedar Rapids field workman’s compensation claims, saying the developed cancer from using the hand- held units.

Adam Smith said “The feeling here is to err on the side of caution until more is known about the issue.”

The ban affects 70 radar guns that will be withdrawn from service. The feeling here is considered to be the first of its kind by a state police agency.

Boats Collide on the Colorado River

Two Boats collided head on in the river in Southeastern California, around 8:00 pm September 1st. None of the boat passengers were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident. Rescuers said they found survivors over 5 miles from the crash. One person sustained life-threatening injuries 9 others were transported to hospitals, and there is still 4 people missing. Rescuers had to call off the search till Sunday morning because it was too dangerous for the divers in the water.

The News article was very informative of what happened before, during, and after the accident. ABC7 did a good job writing this article because they had a good lead on the story. It pulled me in when they started with that rescuers were searching for people in the Colorado river. Some things that stood out to me was that ABC7 used a lot of unnecessary descriptive words.

Title: US open apologize for penalizing player who took her shirt off on tennis court

Website: https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/news/story/us-open-apologizes-french-tennis-player-alize-cornet-57473120By By: Morgan Winsor

Adrienine Bankert, a professional tennis player was given a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct for a dress code violation. Adrienine took off her shirt to switch it around because she said it was on backwards. This penalty prompts claims of sexism. People are tweeting using hashtags saying that the penalty was unfair.  Some people uploaded pictures showing males having their shirts off while on the court during set breaks. US officials apologized for the “incident” that happened at the match.

Morgan Wisner did a great job writing this article because she didn’t lean to either side of opinion. She got to the point, while having enough information to make this story interesting to read.

How the media cover White Supremacists

August 28, 2018

The media is to inform people on the current situation. Journalists have their own freedom of speech and can put their beliefs in the media if they desire. Media organizations should decide what to cover and how to interest their target audience. If consumers of media want to know more about the event they will tune in or read more, people who do not want anything to do with the story they have the right to ignore it. However, I think the more media coverage present reporting the story the more motivated the white supremacist group will be and the general population will tune into the story.
