A look into Sha’Carri Richardson’s crazy summer.

Sha’Carri Richardson became a household name over the summer when she gave a positive drug test that would disqualify her for the Olympic games.

Richardson’s positive test came from her use of marijuana. Which she said she used as a coping mechanism for the death of her biological mother. Richardson took full responsibility for her actions and spoke out publicly to apologize to her fans as well as the country.

Richardson spoke with Savannah Guthrie on Today about the situation where she said, “I want to take responsibility for my actions. I know what I did, I know what I’m supposed to do, what I’m allowed not to do, and I still made that decision.”

The situation garnered a lot of attention from celebrities and fans alike. Actress Gabrielle Union took to Twitter, like many, saying, “Weed is great for many a thing but running faster isn’t one of them. LET HER RUN!!!” Radio personality Damon Bruce also took to Twitter saying, “If smoking weed made ya faster, I’d be the Road Runner. Let. Her. Race.”

As the games were nearing, there were whispers that Richardson could be selected for a U.S. relay team. This gave Sha’Carri and her fans some hope that despite missing out on the 100 meter race, she could potentially help her team to a medal in the 4×100 meter relay. However, she was not selected for any relay team.

The World Anti-Doping Agency has announced that an advisory panel will decide if weed is to remain on the banned substance list. A new policy could be in order after the situation from Richardson over the summer.

Democrats are drafting a bill for a $3.5 trillion budget in hopes to slow climate change and drastically reduce emissions. The budget bill will also include an unprecedented expansion of social welfare programs along with being the single largest piece of climate legislation to pass congress. The focus being to slow the burning of fossil fuels from power plants. Democrats are pushing to get this bill passed in order to help curb the natural disasters that are becoming all too frequent. They also understand that the cost of these disasters has almost cost as much as the proposed budget of the bill.

I like reading about climate change because I feel like it is a bigger problem than a lot of people realize. I want to see this bill passed because I want the world to still be beautiful when I grow old. At the current rate, when I am 50 or 60 years old, the world will be nothing like it is today and I don’t want that to happen. I believe this bill will not only help the Earth, but people as well. Curbing climate change will not only help people’s long term physical health but also their mental health.

Adam Smith, spokesman of the East Dakota Highway patrol informed the public yesterday that hand-held radar guns will be banned due to cancer concerns.

In Sioux City, Iowa, hand-held radar guns will be banned moving forward due to suspicion that long-term exposure with a radar gun will cause cancer. The ban was ordered as a precaution while studies are conducted into the possible links between cancer and the use of such guns.

The ban comes just two months after three workman’s compensation claims. Three municipal officers in Central City say they developed cancer from using the hand-held units.

State troopers will continue to use radar units with transmitters mounted outside of their cruisers, despite losing 70 radar guns to the new ban. With this ban considered to be the first of its kind, the East Dakota Highway patrol is “erring on the side of caution until more is known about the issue” said spokesman Adam Smith.

Supreme Court Does Not Act on Texas’ Near-Total Abortion Ban – The New York Times (nytimes.com)

The Supreme Court recently had the new Texas abortion law come across their desk. The Justices ruled in favor of the law 5 to 4. This ruling has upset many people because the new law is the most restrictive abortion law in history. What has been most upsetting for the public and the 4 Justices ruling against the law, is the fact that the law has no exceptions for rape and incest. Previously the Supreme Court prohibited banning abortion before fetal viability, when a fetus can sustain life outside the womb. This new Texas law does not allow abortions if a heartbeat is detected which is usually around 6 weeks. However, most women have no clue they are pregnant that early. The new law also deputizes private individuals to sue anyone who performs an abortion or even “aids and abets” it. This means the patient may not be sued, but doctors, staff members, and even the person who drove to the clinic can be sued. This law will undoubtedly lead to abortion clinics being shut down and staff members are worried about their futures. President Biden has stated that the new law “blatantly violates” the constitutional right established by Roe v. Wade. However, Roe v. Wade will be potentially overruled in coming months.

This New York Times article intrigued me. I am pro-life so I am more in favor of this law than most. In my opinion it is wrong to abort a fetus because that is a life. Unlike the law, I would make exceptions for rape and incest. This article is interesting because it really focuses on the losing side of the Supreme Court ruling, which is not a bad thing but it really helped me learn some new things about the pro-choice side of things that I was not aware of or didn’t think about. The article was well written and kept me interested throughout.

About Dylan Hamil

Dylan Hamil is a twenty year old junior transfer student from Rockford, Illinois. Dylan first attended Rock Valley Community College in Rockford before coming to Morningside as a marketing major. Dylan is a volleyball player as well as on the bowling team for Morningside. He is a right side hitter on the volleyball court and has bowled a couple of 300’s in his life!

Dylan has plenty of hobbies to keep him busy in his spare time. He loves to golf and has a handicap of 8, which is not too shabby! He also loves to fish and play softball. When fishing, he doesn’t necessarily fish for anything specific, just whatever is biting which is usually bass or blue gail.

When asked what his favorite show was, Dylan answered, Outer Banks. He also mentioned that his favorite character on the show was John B or JJ. Dylan was also faced with the difficult question, would you rather be a bee in a beehive or an ant in an anthill? The answer took some deliberating but he eventually decided to be an ant in an anthill because he wanted to have the strength of an ant rather than to fly like a bee. Part of the reason he chose this is because he comes from a family of bodybuilders and his dad as well as his uncle competed against Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Dylan Hamil is a guy who has a lot of different hobbies and is multi-talented. He is excited for the semester and the new experiences here at Morningside. When Dylan was asked to give some words of wisdom to end this interview he said, “live in the moment”, and that is exactly what Dylan does.
