Honors-Gender Issues

The videos we watched were about Chaz Bono, formerly known as Chastity Bono.  Chaz is the son of Sonny and Cher.  He was born a girl, but has undergone sex changes in order to become a man.  When he was a woman, he was a lesbian, and he never felt right being a woman.  He felt that he was a man trapped in a woman’s body.

The article was about whether the feeling people have like Chaz had is a mental illness or not.  Is being gay a mental illness?  It discusses different aspects and views on homosexual views and thoughts.

I don’t know about anyone else, but gender change messes with my head.  When a person is in the middle of the change, where half of their body is man and the other half woman, what do you call him/her?  Man or woman?  Also, is this ethical and morally right?  Based on my Christian beliefs, I don’t believe people should physically change their gender.  I do not believe it should be illegal, but I don’t believe in it.  I think people should be able to choose whether they want to change or not, but like I said, based on my beliefs, I don’t think it should be done.  Too often in America, our religious beliefs guide our political views.  Our country was built on freedom of expression and religion.  I believe one thing, but that doesn’t mean everyone has to.

I do not know where I stand on the theory of homosexuality and gender identity problems being gender mental illness.  I tend to not think it is mental illness.  I more feel that it depends on how a person’s mind develops throughout childhood and life.
