Mat Reynders

On Friday we had a guest speaker that we attended instead of class. His name was Mat Reynders who just happens to be the son of the president of Morningside. Mat is a senior advertising finance manager at Time Inc., in New York City. Mat gave a very informative and very well presented speech. Mat’s speech related to my life in many different ways. Mat talked a lot about how his life started out and that is about ready to happen to me as I will hopefully graduate in the next year and a half.

Mat’s presentation really should have related really to his audience as most of us were college students and we all will be experiencing what he was talking about here very shortly and we start our own lives in the real world. Mat gave several key tips like follow your path, don’t stop keep pushing higher, and goals are just checkpoints. Mat really didn’t know what he want to do when he got done with college so he just started jumping into jobs that he new nothing about really and he has just continued to follow that path and he just keeps pushing higher. Each job is a checkpoint for Mat as he never wants to stop learning. All of these tips really blend in with my life because once done with college I will to hopefully start my own path to follow and go up from there. As for my goals as checkpoints I use them already. Each year of college is a goal to me that I want to make it through, but it is also just a check point because I still have at least one year of school left that I need to push through. Mat also listed four takeaways on his presentation towards the end; Ask questions, network, take a risk, and surprise yourself and keep thinking bigger.

Overall, I thought this was a very good presentation and speech that Mat gave to us. I feel like it really related to the audience very well since most of us were college students like I stated above and were going to be experiencing a lot of what he had to say very soon. I really related many of the things he had to say to my own life. I really wish Casey Swails could have made the trip up here to. It would have been very interesting to learn a little bit about NASA and what she does since, I really know nothing about NASA in the first place.

The Constant Gardener

The movie The constant Gardener dealt with several different cultural issues and many business issues dealing with the Multinational Corporations. There was a large amount of corporate corruption that went on that I will talk about a little later.

One of the cultural differences was bribery. There was times in the movie when bribery was wanted and it was expected to help. Then there was times when bribery would not help and it was not part of the cultural. For example, towards the end of the movie Justin tried to bribe the pilot with what money he had to save the life of a little kid but, the pilot would not expect it and they left the little kid behind. There was also other situations in the movie where bribes came in.

As for the corruption in the corporates, they were using the African people as guinea pigs to test the drug dypraxa. The African people didn’t really know any better and they thought it was helping them but it was really killing many of their people. The corporates were taking advantage of the African people pretty much. The corporates knew what they were doing but yet they didn’t want to waste several more years and the money to make there product better like they should have. They only cared about the money they were receiving at at them time. They were only concerned about themselves and they knew if they took the time to make there product right, somebody else could come in and take it all away from them.

Sexism in the Workplace

I want to say that MNC’s should not protect the shareholder value if that means showing sexism in the workplace but that would not be reasonable. Businesses are going to do whatever it takes to make a profit and be successful in other countries. Even if that means doing things that may go against the beliefs and morals of a company.  And it is likely that how they act and behave may change depending on what country they are doing business in. Multinational companies are not the only thing that changes depending on where they are doing business; you see a lot of change in politicians as well. In order for someone or something to be successful it is imperative that they adapt and become the most appealing that they can for the audience in which they are trying to engage.

For example, in India there is still so much difference between women and men in, not only the workplace, but just in general. Women are still viewed as dowry burdens and female fetuses are either aborted or neglected and left for dead (Wikipedia 2012). If an American business wanted to do international business in India it would be likely that if women were hired Indians would not be likely to either do business there or be a shareholder in the business. Also, they may even petition against the business or do the business harm in some way just because their beliefs are so strong about how women are inferior to men. This is their beliefs and while everyone is entitled to believe what they wish, sometimes it is hard to understand beliefs that differ from our own and that seem so unfair and detrimental to a society.

India is not the only country that has feelings like these towards women, there are many others as well. I strongly hope that businesses would not care about the beliefs of countries like these and hire women if they are the most qualified for the job. But as everyone knows life is not always fair and this will not always be the case. It is all we can do to hold our morals and values and believe that one day men and women will be viewed as equals by everyone in the world. Hopefully, one day this will be something that is only read about in history books but until then it is a serious issue and is something that has to be dealt with in the workplace.

Writing changing

My writing has changed in many different ways. The writing I did this summer is something I did in like 10 to 15 minutes but with the papers I am doing now I spend hours on and I am actually thinking about what I’m writing and how I am writing it. Just by spending some time on a paper a think can make a huge difference. With my writings now I have better transitions and organization. I don’t repeat myself as much as I used to either.

What I would change

In my paper I would change the organization of it. I didn’t do a very good job of organizing the things I talked about. I would also put more examples in my paper do better explain some of the things I talked about. The last thing that I would probably change to my paper is making a better connection to my audience so the people would know who exactly what I was talking about and to who.

Literacy Again

My definition of literacy hasn’t changed this the last time we blogged about it. But I’m sure as I continue my college career I will continue to learn about literacy and my definition will change and I will understand it better. In my future classes I will probably use literacy in many different ways and learn different things about it from different teachers. Understanding literacy will help me in my future classes.

Experiences

I have had many different experiences and so has just about everybody else in the world. I have learned many different things from my experiences to but all my experience haven’t been the same as other peoples experiences. So what I have learned from my experiences I could help the people going through the same experiences by telling them what I did or should not have done. I would tell them what I learned from my bad experiences so they won’t make the same mistakes that I did.

Connections

I see a lot of different connections between my classes because each one is different from each other. As of right now I am taking a history class, a math class, and this passport class. These connections could benefit me in the future in many different ways I believe because although each of the classes is different from one another you are learning something different from each of them. What you learn from each of them is something I will continue to use as I continue my college career.
