The Constant Gardener

The movie The constant Gardener dealt with several different cultural issues and many business issues dealing with the Multinational Corporations. There was a large amount of corporate corruption that went on that I will talk about a little later.

One of the cultural differences was bribery. There was times in the movie when bribery was wanted and it was expected to help. Then there was times when bribery would not help and it was not part of the cultural. For example, towards the end of the movie Justin tried to bribe the pilot with what money he had to save the life of a little kid but, the pilot would not expect it and they left the little kid behind. There was also other situations in the movie where bribes came in.

As for the corruption in the corporates, they were using the African people as guinea pigs to test the drug dypraxa. The African people didn’t really know any better and they thought it was helping them but it was really killing many of their people. The corporates were taking advantage of the African people pretty much. The corporates knew what they were doing but yet they didn’t want to waste several more years and the money to make there product better like they should have. They only cared about the money they were receiving at at them time. They were only concerned about themselves and they knew if they took the time to make there product right, somebody else could come in and take it all away from them.

This movie really shows how business is sometimes done internationally. People don’t really think about things like this actually happen to lower lower income countries.

Do you think the kind of behavior that the pharma companies engaged in is common or uncommon?

I have to agree with what you said about the everything for the movie. Bribery is always something we do not want to have to think about but happens all the time and the people that do it think there is no wrong in it. Its amazing how we would never in America leave a kid behind like that but when you are in a foreign country the people think differently even if it is just one life like the little girls. Its hard to believe how the multinational corporation do things just to try and test some of their supplies and drugs.
