Five Below: Affordable and Trendy

By Iandra Estupinian–Imagine a store where you could purchase clothes, make-up, electronics, and toys for less than five dollars. Imagine how convenient it would be to go into this store and buy headphones, decorative rugs, and game boards for friends and family without making a huge dent in your wallet.

That would be incredible, wouldn’t it?

Well lucky for you, Five Below is the store for you.

The store just opened at the Lakeport Commons Shopping Center in early March and is a huge hit amongst college students and Sioux City residents. As a college student myself, I took the liberty of visiting the store with some friends.

When entering Five Below, I was immediately reminded of the atmosphere of Claire’s and Walmart at the same time. You can automatically tell that the store aims its merchandise at teenagers and young adults because of the trendy, colorful, and fun stuff they sell.

“Before going to Five Below, I heard from others that the store had everything,” said sophomore, Nancy Coronel. “The one section of the store that stood out to me was the sports and work-out because I found some good equipment like yoga mats and dumbbells.”

Honestly, I was surprised at the selection of merchandise that Five Below had to offer. They had candy, small furnishings, phone/laptop equipment, home décor, make-up, sports/work-out equipment, and a huge display of shirts on the back wall. After making a whole round of the store, I could tell that Five Below is the place you go to when planning to buy a gift for someone young, organizing an event, or when wanting to spice up your lifestyle a bit.

“I wasn’t expecting such good quality for the prices that the store had,” said sophomore, Shawnae Van Veldhuizen. “It had a great variety of items and I think it’s a really good store for college students.”

I agree with Shawnae because I ended up spending most of my shopping time in the room/home decor and clothing sections. When I walked out of the store, I had bought a small Himalayan salt lamp, a small metal side table, and a cat shirt that says, “I’m Allergic to Humans,”–all for $15. A week and a half has gone by and none of my purchases have broken or torn so far.

Factoring in that Five Below changes their merchandise with the different seasons and holidays (to keep up with newer trends), my friends and I would give this store a 3.5/5. Five Below is a cool store to visit but in the end, it’s not for everyone.
