Morningside Hosts Flood Relief Bake Sale

By Cynthia Monroy–Students from three different Morningside organizations found a sweet way to help others impacted by flood waters.

On Monday, the Tri Beta, Pre-Professional Health Club, and Chemistry Club hosted a Flood Relief Bake Sale, in an effort to raise money for flood relief.

In the past three weeks, many have seen or heard of the rising waters from the Missouri River in Sioux City to small town communities like Moville, Le Mars, and Hornick. Even larger cities like Omaha have dealt with flooded highways, homes, and properties.

Many people affected depend on assistance from local agencies and gracious donations from individuals to help them recover from the flooding.

The group set up in the library selling homemade brownies, cupcakes, cookies, and a variety of different pastries.

Morningside junior and organizer Riley Custer says while she is an Arizona native she believes it’s crucial to lend a helping hand to communities in need.

“Great opportunity to reach out to the community with everything going on,” Custer explained “It’s close to home for some students so it’s great to help our community but surrounding communities as well.”

Custer says the funds will be donated to the community they believe it will be most effective in.

The organizations plan to host future events for flood relief efforts.

If you want to help out with flood relief efforts, the American Red Cross is looking for more volunteers. The Salvation Army is accepting food and monetary donations at their South Sioux City location near Walmart and at the main office on 1415 Villa Ave in Sioux City.
