Under the Radar: Morningside University’s Overlooked Teams

By Gabe Schreck – When people think of college athletics, sports like football, basketball, and volleyball often dominate the conversation. At Morningside University, however, some of the most dedicated athletes and successful teams often fly under the radar. Sports like bowling, golf, swimming, cheer, and e-sports may not always fill bleachers or make headlines, but they play an important role in the university’s athletic culture and community.

Bowling is one of the most overlooked sports on campus, yet its demands, such as intense focus, consistency, and mental toughness, are some of the toughest in the sports world. While the sport lacks a traditional game-day atmosphere, the commitment required is no less than that of more well-known programs. The teams at Morningside have also found great success over the years, especially on the women’s side, with the team most recently becoming repeat KCAC champions.

Men’s and women’s golf compete largely outside the public eye as well, with competitions often taking place off campus and across the region. Golfing is a sport that requires large amounts of self-control and patience, proving that golfers represent Morningside through discipline and sportsmanship, even without large crowds watching. The women’s golf team finished inside the top 25 nationally in the fall, showing that there is great potential for what is to come for the sport at Morningside.

Swimming is another sport that receives limited attention despite the physical and mental endurance it requires. Swimmers endure demanding training schedules while competing in events that test speed, stamina, and technique. The teams at Morningside have found great success this year, with three athletes on the men’s side landing NAIA championship invites.

Cheer plays a unique role, supporting other athletic programs while also competing as a sport itself. Cheer athletes train year-round, learning complex routines that require strength, precision, and trust. Though they are often seen on the sidelines, their athleticism and dedication are easy to overlook. Although they have yet to compete this year, the cheer team will compete at NCA nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida, in April.

E-Sports, one of the newer additions to collegiate athletics, challenges traditional definitions of competition. Morningside’s e-sports athletes spend many hours strategizing, practicing their skills, and heightening their reaction time to perform at a high level. While their arena looks different from a gym or field, the competitive drive and preparation are just as real. The e-sports team at Morningside has shown signs of a bright future, finishing second last year at the first-ever GPAC Valorant tournament and falling in the semi-finals of the Rocket League tournament.

Together, these programs show that athletic success is not limited to the most popular sports. The athletes competing in underrepresented programs at Morningside University continue to train, compete, and represent the school with pride, proving that passion and commitment matter more than attention. As the university’s athletic culture continues to grow, these teams remain a vital part of what it means to be a Mustang, whether the spotlight finds them or not.
