By Blake Meacham–The Morningside baseball team, coached by Brian Drent, is supposed to be opening their 2016 campaign against Ashford University in Joplin, MO, this Saturday and Sunday. The four-game set, split between the two days, is in trouble. Recent weather changes have made the probability of snow on Sunday much more likely.
“Our original plan is to leave Friday morning and practice when we get there, before our first game Saturday,” Drent told his players at Monday’s practice. “If snow becomes more than probable for Sunday, then we’ll leave Thursday afternoon.”
The forecast for Joplin last week was sunny and 65 degrees for the 13th and 14th. As of Monday, though, the forecast had the temperature drop to about 50 degrees and overcast for Saturday, and to about 30 degrees and snowing for Sunday.
If the forecast starts to look more and more accurate as the week goes on, the Mustangs will have no choice but to change the games to Friday and Saturday.
“Either way, we’re going to get four games in,” explained Drent. “We just don’t want a repeat of last year, when we had to drive 10 hours south just to find decent enough weather to play in.”
Last season, in one of the first weekends for the baseball team, the Mustangs were forced to travel down to Dallas, Texas, to play games that were originally supposed to be played in Topeka, Kansas. However, snow and sub-30 degree temperatures made that impossible.
The games are scheduled for 1 and 3:30 pm on Saturday, and 12 and 2:30 pm on Sunday.
