Between classes and clubs, college students have one more thing they need to add to their résumés. Internships.
Morningside College student Jackie Bossman decided to ditch the typical local internship and go for something a little higher on the hill. Capitol Hill.
“I lived in Springfield, Virginia, so I would have to commute in,” Bossman said. “It took me ten minutes to drive to the metro station. It took me an hour on the metro, and then it took me fifteen minutes to walk from the metro station.” After her lengthy commute, Bossman would arrive at the Hart building where she interned for Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley.
As an admin intern, Bossman was in charge of the tour schedules, but halfway through her internship the tours hit a snag. “They closed the Capitol’s Rotunda on the inside, because they had to do construction… so we had to change our tour.” But not even the stress of changing the tour schedules stole D.C.’s magic.
Bossman said, “I want to go back as soon as I can. Actually I went through a sort of depression since being back here, because D.C. was my dream city. I was constantly happy there. I wasn’t ever in a bad mood… so being here and not where my heart is makes me want to go back.”
In the future you probably won’t be seeing Jackie Bossman on the Hill. She wants to take a different path in Washington. “If I could do some sort of business job or work for the C.I.A. and do intelligence work. I would want to do something like that,” she said.
