By Lauren Sorenson–For those who don’t know who Noam Chomsky is, words like genius and expert seem to be synonymous with his name. Chomsky, a linguistic expert and U.S. foreign policy critic, among many other things, will be speaking at Morningside College virtually on March 18th.
Chomsky, who was named the world’s top public intellectual in a 2005 poll, has taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for almost 60 years. He has been called the “father of modern linguistics” for his contributions to the understanding of human language. He has received honorary degrees from over 40 institutions. Chomsky has also authored over 100 books and has given lectures all around the world.
Curtis Rife, a recent Morningside graduate, said, “It will be exciting to listen to such an icon of the intellectual world.”
Chomsky will give an interactive lecture on the use and misuse of language by media and people in power at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, in the UPS Auditorium in Lincoln Center, 3627 Peters Ave. The event is part of the Hickman-Johnson-Furrow Learning Center Virtual Lecture Series. The audience will be able to ask questions and interact with the speaker. The lecture will also stream live at: www.youtube.com/user/TheHJFLearningCenter.
