By Natalie Waller–The 56th Grammy Awards premiered on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. LL Cool J was the host for the evening.
Beyonce opened the show with a racy performance; along side with her husband Jay Z they performed “Drunk In Love”. Daft Punk were one of the top winners of the evening, winning Best Pop Duo, Album of the Year, and Record of the Year. Taylor Swift was let down when she heard “R” starting to be announced, when Daft Punk’s album Random Access Memories beat her album Red for Album of the Year.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis brought something new to the awards this year. During the performance of their hit “Same Love” with Madonna and Queen Latifah; 33 couples joined them to get married. The couples agreed to get married while at the Staples Center in efforts to make awareness of the fight for marriage equality.
This raised some heads and sent people on a rampage. Josh Mohr stated, “Gay marriage is something that is showing up in many states and will keep showing up more and more. Why were people surprised to see something like this pulled when they knew thousands of people would be watching?” He also shared, “ What will happen at the Super Bowl next week?”
Missing from the night was Miley Cyrus, Justin Timberlake, and Rihanna. Maybe they were “twerking” somewhere else that night.
