Spring Driving Tips

By Brittany Poss ~ Along with warm weather comes the familiar sound of roaring engines speeding down the highway. Motorcycles are back on the road. This means drivers and motorcyclists alike should be more aware of their surroundings while driving.

Each year thousands of cyclists are killed in vehicle crashes, therefore it is very important to be extra cautious. As the increasing presence of bikes during spring take drivers by surprise, there are some tips everyone should consider before hitting the open road.

For drivers:
– Check blind spots and check them again. It is much easier to notice a car than it is to notice a cycle approaching.

– When switching lanes, use the blinker for an extended period of time so others around may be fully aware before moving.

– Decrease the speed of the vehicle in rainy weather. It is more difficult for every rider on the road to slow safely when the road is wet.

– Allow a 3-4 second greater following distance when riding next to a motorcycle so there is more time to react in case of an emergency.

For motorcyclists:
– When approaching the blind spot of a car, pay attention to the driver’s head. If the motorist turns their head in the direction of the motorcycle, the car may be switching lanes but may not have seen the cycle coming.

– Make slow movements instead of jetting through traffic lanes so as not to startle another driver or cause a vehicle to stop too quickly.

– When riding side by side with other motorcyclists, make sure both bikes are within the traffic lanes so other vehicles have room to pass if needed.

– Avoid the temptation to show off by excessively exceeding the speed limit or trying potentially dangerous tricks.

Remember, safety comes from driving safely. Using these tips will help each driver to avoid many of the common causes of collisions.
