by Chloe Pieper–As summertime grows closer, students are searching for housing opportunities on and off-campus. Due to May Terms, working jobs, internships, and more, they need to stay in the Sioux City area. However, it is not as easy to find a place that is “college student-friendly.”
There are a few downtown apartment complexes that will possibly turn away full-time students as stated in the regulations prior to an application. This makes it a bit harder for students to find a place. Applications are not a guarantee of actually getting a place. It is used as a guide to see if you are the right fit for that place.
Jadyn Steffen said, “I am looking for an apartment off campus for next year but it is so hard. These places are either not available or they don’t have the amenities I want. I want to stay in Sioux City so I can keep working at my job.”
The price of rent is a big deal-breaker when it comes to searching for the right place. Some complexes have the rent set as much as a monthly tuition bill. This is not always the best idea for some students. It might be a really pretty apartment in a great area, but if you cannot afford it then it might not be for you.
Emma Larsen said, “I was looking for a nice place off-campus for my senior year. The apartment complex I found had a lot of amenities for the price it is. I am living with other people so the apartment is not as expensive for a two-bedroom place. I would call it an apartment for old people.”
Since apartments are so hard to find and get, some students have signed leases for houses and have multiple roommates. Houses are a little more expensive but if you have 4-6 people living there, then rent becomes a little cheaper. However, you run into a lot of people under one roof that may cause problems. Houses around campus are hard to find as well.
Taysia Aasen said, “I am so excited to get to live in my house off-campus with my best friends next year. We looked at many other places before we decided on this one. Rent won’t be so bad and it’s not that far from campus.”
Alleycat Holdings LLC. rents out many of the apartments and houses in the Siouxland area but their waitlist is extensive and they do not have any current openings for the next year.
Maggie Lynch said, “I tried looking for a house off-campus with some buddies that Alleycat offered. There were not enough open options and I needed it as soon as possible.”
Over the summer, Dimmitt will be under major construction so it will not be available to live in until the fall semester. Roadman, the apartments, and the Plex will be available to students for summer housing. However, applications were due April 13 for summer and May Term housing.
