The 2024 Morningside men’s soccer team celebrating their GPAC Regular Season Championship.
The men’s soccer team is preparing for its first game of the season this Tuesday, August 26, in Des Moines, IA, in a ranking match against the Grand View Vikings at 4 p.m.
The Mustangs come into the season as the defending GPAC regular-season champions. Morningside leads the GPAC preseason poll and enters 2025 as the conference favorite.
Morningside has lost several players from the 2024 championship squad, including six players who received all-conference recognition. But the Maroon roster is strengthened by a large incoming class of 34 freshmen and three transfers, adding depth and competition for the new season.
The Mustangs also return players who reinforce and validate their No. 1 preseason ranking, such as Tim Teschner, a GPAC Second Team selection last season, and senior midfielder Guillermo Román, who earned honorable mention. Another reason for optimism is head coach Tom Maxon, the reigning GPAC Coach of the Year. Under his leadership, the Mustangs finished 11-6-2 overall last season and won 8 of 10 GPAC matches on their way to the regular-season championship.
The ranking is more than just prestige: it directly affects postseason seeding in both the GPAC and NAIA tournaments, higher seeds often mean more favorable matchups and, in some cases, the advantage of hosting games at home.
Guillermo Román, a senior midfielder from Ecuador, knows what’s at stake. “We know the title is hard to defend, but this team works for each other. That’s what gives us confidence going into every game.”
The Mustangs are ready to kick off their 2025 season on August 26. Students, alumni, and local fans are encouraged to come out and show their support. The road to another GPAC title starts here.
