by Chloe Krommendyk–Recently the Morningside student government sent out a survey regarding diversity to all the students here at Morningside. This survey was part of the new student government initiative that the diversity subcommittee came up with to gauge students’ thoughts on topics regarding diversity on campus.
The survey helped determine what has been effective so far on campus, as well as what students would like to see in the future.
The main topics discussed in the survey were LGBTQIA+ rights, women’s rights, Native American relations, equality, privilege, disability awareness, international human rights, Latino culture, international cultures across campus, and racial justice.
Sophomore Senator Camrie Miranda said, “Though there were only 28 responses, we as a government value student opinions and view this as a good stepping stone to move forward on campus.”
According to the students who answered the survey, some recent events that focused on these topics include: DOT+ Gender Undone’s Transgender Awareness Week, the STAND for Human Trafficking, Black Leadership Panel, Great Hamentashen Baking Event, and the MSNA and Gender Undone Breast Cancer Event.
The survey asked what actions Student Government could take in the future to encourage diversity, equity, inclusion, openness, and togetherness on campus. Some responses included: funding projects, gender-inclusive halls, donations towards a diversity fund, disability awareness events, culture fairs, international events, and emails from the committee about minority group histories.
With the introduction of a new Morningside president, Dr. Albert Mosley, the embrace of diversity and inclusion will continue as the campus will move forward together.
Miranda said, “Looking into next year, student government hopes to build off these requests and listen to the students. Fulfilling requests to remain unbiased, invite all students to meetings, and harbor a safe environment.”
