Grand View takes down Morningside men’s volleyball

by Jonathan Covert–The Grand View University Vikings made quick work of the Mustang men on Tuesday night, winning in straight sets. Grand View University is currently number two in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) rankings.

The Vikings, who were on a quest to win their 14th straight game, got out of the gate and stormed to a 14-5 lead. After a Mustang time out, the teams would go point for point before the Vikings wrapped up the set on a 9-4 run. Set one went the way of the Vikings 25-11. 

Morningside took the lead a couple of times in the second set as the teams again traded points to get to a 5-4 Viking lead. Grand View extended their lead going on a 13-7 run, making the score 18-11. The teams went back and forth until set point for the Vikings 24-17. The Mustangs would make a late push again but ultimately fell 25-19.

Grand View started the third set strong by getting out to an 8-4 lead. Morningside would get as close at 10-8 then 16-14 before the Vikings finished the third set on a 9-2 run. Final score in set three was 25-16.

The Mustangs were led in kills by Tommy Looper (six), in assists by Diego Aguilar (20), and in digs by Tatum Gray (four). The Vikings were led by Felix Chapman who had five service aces and 16 kills. His teammate Raffy Polanco had 11 kills, Francsico Arredondo had 35 assists, and Erick Villar had five digs.

With the win, the Vikings improved to 15-1. The Mustangs fell for the fourth time in five games and 4-12 in the season. The Mustangs make a six-hour trek north next Tuesday to take on The University of Jamestown in conference play.
