Shrill is a journey of finding self-confidence

by Tracie Tuttle–The first season of Shrill takes the viewer on a journey of a young woman finding her self-confidence.

The Hulu original follows Annie Easton played by SNL’s Aidy Bryant. Easton is an overweight and under-confident woman who puts up with a loser boyfriend, a passive-aggressive mother, and an indifferent boss, until she decides that she deserves more respect. Throughout the six-episode season, viewers get to watch Easton find her self-worth while trying to navigate through a world that was constantly trying to change her.

Shrill is different from many other shows that represent plus size women. The show doesn’t try to make women feel bad for not wanting to lose weight. This show embraces the idea of accepting who you are, as you are, without trying to drastically change yourself. Shrill celebrates the human body for what it is.

One impactful scene that will make any woman with curves feel represented is when Easton is invited to a pool party– a plus size pool party. Every woman in attendance is wearing a swimming suit, excluding Easton until she finally felt comfortable enough to join in on the pool party fun.

This show is worth taking a look at for anyone trying to become more self-assured in who they are and how they look. Not to mention, the episodes are less than 25 minutes long, making this TVMA rated show an easy binge.

The second season of Shrill is set to come out late January. In the meantime, you can catch up with the first season on Hulu.
