The plastic wrapping around the golden cake filled with nothing but sugar cant hold me back form eating this sugary goodness.

As I rip into the plastic I get a whiff of nothing but the sweet smell of the golden cake. As I slowly push the plastic down the twinkie i finally have the beauty all the way unwrapped.

The moist cake lays in my hand and and as I go in for the first bite my teeth sink into the spongey cake and touch the cream filled center. As I start to chew I slowly regret eating this because I have practice later and I don’t feel like tasting these come back up.

As I swallow I slowly become unsatisfied with the choice of loving twinkies because these things are diabetes in a plastic wrapping.

Local band, “Don Juan” tells fans to get ready because, “we hope to have product on the streets and on the airwaves by the end of the summer.”

The band formed about 3 years ago when John Dodge  began singing with band member Don Cooper. Although at first the idea of being in a band felt irresponsible to Cooper. He stated, “It took a long time to shuck the robe of responsibility.” Cooper fought for years deciding on what to do with his life. His love for writing songs and playing guitar did not seem like a suitable career thats would take him far in life so he decided to become an english teacher just in case.

Cooper then realized that happiness in life was the most important thing and that “just in case attitude” and settling for less wasn’t bringing happiness to his life. That idea of never settling is an idea the band still holds true to today.

The main goal of the band is to be happy. “You don’t have to live in the Hollywood Hills or drive a Mercedes Benz. “It’s tough but it’s worth it” Dodge told us.  “Nobody settles, for anything but best,” Dodge says. Like any group there can be times when you may not see eye to eye. Dodge continued to say, “we love each other and we fight all the time. That’s the way we work. Its all ultimately positive.”

University of Kansas pride runs in the family according to Renee van Beaumont, an admissions counselor here at Morningside college. “My family started really getting into KU when my cousin was baby jay for a few years. We went to game and just continued to support the team after my cousin stopped being baby jay.”

Renee never played basketball in high school because she spent most of her time on the marching band or playing golf. “At first my dad forced me to go golfing with him and when I got older it kind of grew on me” She ended up coming to Morningside College to play golf.

Besides basketball and golf, Renee says that she really loves any sports honestly but she is really into Kansas sports team. She has been to multiple University of Kansas games of course, and a couple Kansas City Chiefs football games.

Student Athletics; Extracurricular activity or part-time job?

Student athletes are believed to be more focused on their sport rather than on their academic studies. Student athletes prove that stereotype wrong every day. NCAA requires student athletes to maintain an accumulative GPA of 2.0 in order to participate in their extracurricular activity of choice because they believe that academics are a top priority. If the athlete does not comply with the NCAA rules of maintain the required GPA then they are unable to participate in the sport.

A typical day for a student athlete begins around 6 am and goes roughly until 7 pm that day. Student athletes have to juggle their sport schedule of practice and lifting with the schedule of being a full-time student. With all of this on their plate they are still required by the NCAA to be a good student and make academics a top priority over sports.

Some compare student athlete’s sport to a part time job. Bestcollegesonline.com stated, “the average student athlete spends about 30 hours a week on class and schoolwork, then turns around and spends 20 hours a week on athletics.”

Instead of people saying that student athletes don’t need to work as hard in school because they are only there for sports they should really take into account everything that student athletes actually have on their plates. Like the NCAA states on their website, “Student athletes must, therefore, be students first.”

Firefighter’s got a call from two girls asking for help with a cat stuck in a tree. Fire rescue arrives at the scene on 102 11th Ave and see the calico cat meowing in the tree. The parents of the twins, Charlie and Kim Decker arrived to the scene confused on what was going on because they had just gotten back from work.

Fire fighter Bob Harwood filled them in on what was going and began to climb the tree to rescue the cat because the ladder on the fire truck could not reach up to the cat. Bob had to climb 50 feet in the tall oak tree to get the cat. He rescues the cat and as he is descending down the tree he reaches his foot down onto a dead limb that breaks causing Bob to fall the last 15 feet of the tree.

Paramedics arrive at the scene and Bob has broke his left leg from the fall but is doing just fine at St. Lukes Hospital, the cat landed on Bob and is doing fine as well.

Ten upperclassmen at Northeast high school have been suspended for one week. Principal Laura Vibelius commented, “there was general unrest.” A food fight closed the cafeteria Tuesday as well as false alarms that were sounded three times Wednesday. Disgruntled students seem to be the culprits for these actions.

The culprits  said they were protesting the Monday suspension of five students, also suspended for a week, who were caught smoking marijuana in the school parking lot. Principle Vibelius stated, “not so much unrest because of suspensions, but because of summer vacation being so near.” She sees no continuation of these “incidents” in the near future.

Texaco gasoline truck overturned on the outskirts of town on 48th street and Correctionville Road. The gas flooded the sewer lines for two blocks around. The gas reaches to the ditches and on the streets so officers are rerouting cars through side streets to avoid the gas flood.

Four families have had to evacuate the area because of sewer line gas. Fire Chief Charles Hochandel says: “The firemen followed catastrophe and hazmat procedures set up before hand for just such an occurrence.” Steer clear of 48th and Correctionville Road for two hours while they try and clean up the gas and get all the gas flushed away.

A 14 year old boy named Ahmed Mohamed loves to build and invent things. He decided to build  clock and take it to his high school in Irving Texas. This action later ended up with Ahmed in handcuffs because they accused him of creating a bomb hoax and was suspended for three days. The police later said he would not be charged after the public questioned about whether or not he was questioned because of his religion.

This story became so popular that President Obama tweeted saying “Cool Clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. Its what makes America great.” Ahmed plans on accepting the Presidents invitation to the White House as well as possibly transferring high schools. “This episode is a good illustration of how pernicious stereotypes can prevent even good-hearted people who have dedicated their lives to educating young people from doing the good work that they set out to do,” said Josh Earnest, the White House press secretary.

Details about the case were later revealed saying that he brought it to school and showed his engineering teacher and his teacher said, “that’s cool, but don’t show any other teacher.” Ahmed was in english when it beeped and another teacher saw it and said, “it looks like a bomb.” The Irving police chief, Larry Boyd, said the police were justified in detaining the teenager based on the information they had at the time, when initially it was “not immediately evident that it was the experiment.”

On Wednesday morning a South Sioux City man, Moyer Quick was driving with his wife Dorothy Quick and Maxine Steuerwald west bound on highway 20.

Quick’s passed the truck driven by Randy Radin on the two lane highway but did not complete the pass and rear-ended Radin. The impact sent both vehicles into the ditch on the north side of the road and Quick’s vehicle rolled over once.

Moyer Quick was pronounced dead at the scene while his wife  is reported to be in good condition. The other passenger in the car, whose relationship with Quicks is unknown is in fair condition.

The driver of the truck is in critical condition with a fractured skull and internal injuries.

The accident is still under investigation. Iowa Highway patrol believe that weather was not a factor in this accident.

One man dead and 3 injured in a crash on highway 20 last Wednesday in South Sioux City. The autopsy shows Moyer Quick had a heart attack while driving which may have  caused him to hit Randy Radin’s truck with his rear end sending both cars into a ditch and Quick’s car to roll over once.

His wife, Dorothy Quick was a passenger in the car as well as Dorothy’s sister, Maxine Steuerwald. Dorothy has been released and Maxine is scheduled to be released. Randy is still in critical condition with a fractured skull and some internal injuries.

Does cancer have a positive affect on our lives now? Yesterday Iowa highway Patrol ordered a ban of hand-held radar guns in Des Moines, Iowa. Does this mean no more speeding tickets? According to spokesman Adam Berluti, “the reason they are trying to ban the hand-held radar guns is because of concerns that troopers could develop cancer from longterm exposure to the radiation waves emitted by the devices. The ban was ordered as a precaution while studies are conducted into the possible links between cancer and the use of such guns. ”

Does this mean this is the end of those annoying speeding tickets? The ban affects 70 radar guns that will be withdrawn from service. State troopers will continue to use radar units with transmitters mounted on the outside of their cruisers. Apparently nobody likes state troopers enough to keep them from caner. “The feeling here is to err on the side of caution until more is known about the issue,” Berlutti said. “The whole situation is under review.” So don’t think about driving down the highway feeling like a NASCAR driver because you’re more then likely to unfortunately get a speeding ticket.

As his term is coming to an end President Obama began his public relations campaign. The main goal of this campaign is to help lower the cost of college and make it more affordable. In Detroit he announced his idea of making community college free for students across the country. To help raise awareness Mr. Obama has presented announcements featuring students, community college alumni and celebrities to help support his plan.

Many republicans are not liking Obama’s plan to spend $60 billion over the next 10 years to make community college free. Congress is unlikely to approve of this expensive plan. Another plan that he plans to unveil during this campaign is creating new federal grants intended to encourage companies to hire apprentices who can “learn while they earn” acquiring new skills on the job instead of in the classroom. The development of this apprenticeship is costly howerver, about $175 million in grants to 45 partners. Those prtners include community colleges, privite businesses and labor organizations. The article said, “Officials said the $175 million was not intended to pay the salaries of the apprentices. But, they said, they hoped that the federal seed money would help the apprentice programs become permanent, providing opportunities for years to come”
