Chapter 1. Why are games fun?

After reading that chapter I think one reason why games are fun is because having fun is the opposite of depression. It talks about how some people think they want to go and lay down and not do anything and that will be better than work. If you go lay down and do nothing you will eventually sink into boredom, then eventually into depression. If your playing your mind is concentrated and you accomplishing things that makes you feel better. It talked about how people who play video games actually watch less T.V. the fewest. This surprised me at first but then I thought about it and realized that I get bored watching T.V. pretty fast. The book had a saying from Bernard Suit that said “Playing a game is the voluntary attempt to overcome unnecessary obstacles”. Which basically means that somebody agrees to play a game under certain rules. The book uses golf as an example. You have to use clubs, start far away, and have to try and get it in the whole in the fewest amount of strokes. I think when you play under certain rules like golf you get a better sense of achievement because it makes the game harder. I know when ever I would use cheat codes I wouldn’t feel the same because it was to easy and i didn’t feel like i accomplished as much. The book also says there are four major parts. Goals is the first one which is any type of thing you need to accomplish. Second is rules, which is what everybody needs to follow to play correctly. Also it is limitations on how one would reach a goal. Feedback is the third, and that would be like a points bar or kill meter or anything that keeps track of how good your doing or something that tells you what you have done. Last is voluntary participation. This means everybody agrees to the rules and goals and follows them. All of this makes sense to me and is pretty much why I think games are fun.

Gamer Profile

I think video games are a very fun way to use your free time. They let you achieve things that make it fun. The trash talking and epic match ups that go along with it keep it interesting.  There is always a new game and new challenges to accomplish. I like first person shooting games and zombie shooters. I think Madden and COD really got me hooked into playing everyday. I have a PS3 but have played and probably had every system. I have stayed up for releases. I play a lot of games on my phone also. I usually play a couple hours a day. I probably started playing when I was about 8, with the Super Nintendo. Mario Karts was probably my first favorite game. Challenging people with my favorite racer Yoshi was always fun for me. It Then went to James Bond 007, then off to Madden and Halo. After that i was really addicted to Call Of Duty. I played the very first couple and loved them. When Modern Warfare came out, I couldn’t get enough of it. I would go to school, go to practice, eat, then play. I was all about the K/D ratio. I have probably spent more money than I should have on video games but I think it was worth it. I don’t know if I would consider my self as big as a gamer as I use to be, because I am more busy than I was. I don’t see my self stopping anytime soon.

Me advertisement is below. My advertisement is for weight loss pills. The thing I see in these weight loss advertisements is how it tries to tell the people how easy it is. Also how healthy it is, without giving a lot of information about the side effects, like most products. It also talks about how their product is not like any other products out there. But more than likely it is. I think some people might see these advertisements and then think about themselves and not feel as happy about their bodies. That is why people sometimes get sucked into this. I think this advertisement is like Kafka’s story because it obviously deals with weight loss but also, it tries to convince people that life would be better if you use this product. Sometimes people who think they would be happier doing something or looking a certain way end up not being happy. Like when the hunger artist thought he could fast longer and do things his way to prove to people how amazing he was. At the end people stopped caring and he forgot the days and couldn’t even feel successful in what he did. Sometimes people get worked up on how they should look from advertisements, then that’s all they worry about. Instead of being happy about who they are and be thankful for what they have.

Alex Watters

I think the presentation was great. I thought it was cool that he was so joyful and had a lot of jokes. I feel like if I was in that situation I would very down and sad, but he looks like is very happy and has a great life ahead of him.

I was thinking after about how he was talking about having backup plans for life, so if you don’t like your original plan you always have something else to try. Also his presentation made me think about my life or my friends and families lives. How lucky we are to be able to do the things we can do. We take a lot of things for granted and sometimes it takes a story like this to make you realize that.

His presentation made a big impression on me. Made me realize how valuable life is and what we should work for to be successful.

Old Encounters feeling new

One encounter that I can think of is when I left for my first AAU basketball game. This game was in Minneapolis. I had been in the cities before that so the that wasn’t too much of a change for me but a when I encountered an entirely new feeling was when I came home after spending three days there. During the third day of the cities I was feeling a little annoyed from the busy traffic and loud weird looking people. When I got home everything just felt a little different. After that encounter, I began to appreciate the small town atmosphere more than I ever had before. I don’t think I could ever live in a busy place like Minneapolis for more than a couple days. Being a small town person is just something I enjoy.

Naughty Times at the Hennen Farm

When I was about 12 years old, my cousin Walker and I had the great idea to make a ramp out of some spare wood on the farm for our bikes. After about 10 minutes of hard work, and pounding about 50 nails in many different areas on the old water warped wood, we were ready for take off. Although we were very excited that we had made such a masterpiece of a ramp, we decided to take the smart option of testing it first. We slowly peddled our bikes to the ramp, gradually going up the ramp and then coming back down. It seemed pretty sturdy, but creaked and croaked under the weight of the bike so we were not positive how take off would end up. The good news was that Walker had a younger brother named Cole that was built like a brick wall at the age of 8. We could get this kid to do anything, so after about a half hour off begging and persuading him that he wouldn’t be as cool as the older kids if he didn’t do it, he was sold. We told him to take off from about 20 yards away and got him a helmet before making sure that no adults were around to witness this. Once he was all suited up, he took off with a smile on his face but once he began nearing the ramp his smile turned into a concerned look because the bike he was riding did not have any brakes on them. As the old farm bike raced towards and onto the ramp the inclined board snapped and sent Cole soaring forward causing his man parts to collide with handlebars of the bike. Following the crash he laid next to the old ramp, on the old brakeless bike, grimacing in pain with his hands clutching his throbbing crotch. After about 10 minutes of laughing and pointing at him, I got up to make sure my little cousin was all right. He had a couple bruises here and there, but that of course made him tough and would help him get the ladies. We did not tell our parents about this experience because we knew better at that age. If they would have known about our little “incident” they would of punished us and made us work for the problems we had caused. We all received a good learning experience from this so telling our parents didn’t seem like a big deal at the time.
