Lead Exercise 2

September 17th, 2015

Story 1

Firefighter Bob Harwood  broke his leg by falling 15 feet, while saving a cat from a tree.

Harwood responded to a call at 102 11th Avenue.  A calico cat was stuck in a fifty foot tall oak tree. The cat’s owners are twins Suzanne and Samantha Decker, daughters of Charlie and Kim Decker.

A dead limb broke, causing Harwood to fall the last fifteen feet on his descent down. The cat landed on top of him and is fine.  Harwood is doing “just fine” at St. Luke’s Hospital.

Story 2

Ten students at North East High School get suspended for protesting other students’ suspensions.

On Monday five students got suspended for a week for smoking marijuana in the school parking lot. In protest ten upperclassmen seem to be the culprits of Tuesdays closing of the cafeteria due to a food fight. Along with pulling the fire alarm three times on Wednesday.

Principal Laura Vibelius commented on the unrest. “Not so much unrest because of suspension, but because of summer vacation being so near,” she said. She sees no continuation of these “incidents” in the future.

Story 3

Overturned Texaco gasoline truck on outskirts of town causes floods, evacuations, and detours.

A Texaco gasoline truck overturned on the corner of 48th Street and Correctionville Road. Gas flooded the sewer lines on 2 blocks around including streets and ditches. As a result four families had to be evacuated because of sewer-line gas.

This incident was serious for 2 hours until the gas was flushed away.

Fire Chief Charles Hochandel says: “The firemen followed catastrophe and hazmat procedures set up beforehand for just such an occurrence.”

Local man killed in 2 vehicle collision

September 17th, 2015

Local man killed in 2 vehicle collision on Highway 20 last Thursday. Three survivors are in the Marion Health Center.

Moyer Quick, 65, of  South Sioux City was killed in a 2 car collision Thursday at 11am, two miles east of Sioux City on Highway 20.

Quick collided with truck driver Randy Radin, 17, of Sioux City.

The 3 survivors were taken to Marian Health Center. 2 injured were in the Quick vehicle. Dorothy Quick, 61,  was in “good” condition and Maxine Steuerwald, Dorothy’s sister, of Lawton was in “fair” condition. Radin is in “critical” condition with a fractured skull and internal injuries.

As of yesterday, Dorothy Quick has now been released. Steuerwald is scheduled to be released.

Iowa Highway Patrolman, Patric Stewart stated both vehicles were heading west. Quick struck Radin while passing. Both vehicles went into the ditch on the north side. Quick’s vehicle rolled once.

The accident is still under investigation. A causing  factor could be Quick’s heart attack while driving.

I read an article form the New York Times called, “Egypt Security Forces Accidentally Kill Mexican Tourists” by Liam Stack. It’s about how Egyptian security forces shot a tour group that had been mistaken for terrorists because they were driving in a prohibited area.

This story is newsworthy because it touches on the news value: bizarre. How to do trained security guards accidentally kill tourists?

The audience would be for adults, Egypt, Mexico and maybe anyone planning on taking a desert tour in Egypt.

The lead answered who, when, where, and what. The number of the deaths and injured were given in the lead. The only thing that it didn’t give was why. If you really wanted to know why then you had the option to keep reading.

Since this was recent (last night) there is still more evidence to be found. Such as, why was the tour in a prohibited area to begin with? That is something that I would like to know.

I like this article and wouldn’t have done anything differently. You can tell that the author got information from a lot of different sources from both Egypt and Mexico.

Police hand-helds linked to cancer

September 10th, 2015

Yesterday, the Iowa Highway patrol ordered ban of hand-held radar guns in Des Moines, Iowa. Concerns of cancer from long-term radiation exposure initiated this precaution.

According to spokesman Adam Berluti “The feeling here is to err on the side of caution unit more is known about the issue. The whole situation is under review.”

This is the first movement in it’s kind by a state police agency. Three officers in Cedar Rapids filed workman’s compensation claims saying they developed cancer from these hand-held guns two months ago.

The ban affects 70 radar guns that will be taken out of service. State troopers can still have a radar unit, only it will mounted on the outside of their vehicles.

Studies are being conducted into the possible links of the guns to cancer.

Last person I talked to

September 10th, 2015

I was talking to my classmate Macy about what we are supposed to wear for the Ag Lab Field Trip coming up. She is a Freshman Ag student who was seeking help from me, a sophomore Ag student because she had missed the last class. Macy has short blonde hair, a nose ring. She was wearing a white T-shirt and grey sweatpants. Both of us have not ordered the Ag polos yet, so she decided she would ask the Professor what to wear instead of the polo and get back to me on it because I had to get going to my Fundamentals of Journalism class. The conversation lasted only a minute, but it was short and to the point and mostly in questions. We both had a problem that we were trying to solve together.

I read an article from the New York Times called “Ellen DeGeneres Interview Offers Hillary Clinton Chance to Connect With Women”. It’s about how Clinton and many other past presidential candidates have sought to get interviewed on Ellen to show their fun side to female viewers.

This story is newsworthy because it relates to News Values such as Timeliness. Next November the polls will be open, so politicians are already well into their campaigns. People who like Hillary Clinton are now informed that they can watch Ellen to see a different side of her. Those who don’t support Clinton, now know not to watch that specific episode.

As stated in the article the target audience is women. The audience can also be Clinton supporters.

The lead is a little misleading. The title talks about Clinton, but the first paragraph talks about how lucky the Ellen Show was to get an interview with one of the most talked about women during the summer…Caitlyn Jenner. The next line stated that they also got Clinton. The lead did get my attention, but it also got confusing how Jenner fit into the story.

I also noticed that the author used adjectives like warmhearted to describe Ellen’s Show and the way she comedically handles interviews. This author was obviously a huge Ellen fan and had a lot of positive things to say about her and her successful show. Positive quotes from Ellen’s producers were also slipped into the article to make it more about her rather than Clinton. The author also mentioned how women are now getting turned-off by Clinton, so that is why she needs this interview.

Good Lead

September 8th, 2015

This article has a good lead because it sums the story up. It says how the Kentucky clerk, Kim Davis, was released, but now her future will be effected. Just that one paragraph lets me know that she is not in prison. Yet, I am intrigued to read on the see about her future with her job.

News Comment 2

I read the article from the New York Times called, ” Missouri Teenagers Protest a Transgender Student’s Use of the Girls’ Bathroom”. This was written by Karen Workman. The article was about how students at a Missouri High School walked out in protest because a senior boy turned girl wanted to use the women’s locker room to change for P.E.

Yes, this is newsworthy because it’s dealing with a person’s rights. Also ever since the Bruce Jenner/Caitlyn Jenner event, transgenders and identity have been  popular topics of discussion.

The audience is both supporters of transgenders and the one’s  against. Mostly teenagers and their parents will be most influenced by this since that is the age range in the story.

The title makes it sound like the protesting students are the enemy and to feel sorry for the transgender teen.

The article quoted a parent who was against the situation. I would have liked a quote from a parent who didn’t have a problem with the situation or even Ms. Perry’s parents’ comments about the situation.

Like I mentioned earlier, the title led for me to think that the teen was being victimized. The article contained quotes from her saying how she felt scared for her own safety, and wanted things to change in a positive way for other students struggling with sexuality. I did like how the brought in a parent’s opinion from the other side saying how his daughters right to privacy is being broken. I could not detect any sort of bias in this article. Therefore, I would have just wanted to see the view of Ms. Perry’s parents and if they will take a stand for their child.

Interview-Danny

September 1st, 2015

Danny Penaloza is a  single 20 year old Junior attending Morningside College. This History major with a double minor in Philosophy and Business would like to one day be a historian for a museum. He is originally from Orange County, California and decided to come to Iowa for school because he liked how smaller private schools gave him more one on one attention. Danny has one brother and one sister, and is a fan of watching anything sports or history related on TV.  Activities that he is currently involved in on campus are the Philosophy Club, College Democrats, and he is in the DSP Fraternity.

Objectivity

September 1st, 2015

My definition of objectivity is the finding an objective to keep non-biased. It’s what a story should be, but often gets personal opinions to make it bias or even untrue.

We should be objective so we can have credibility and be trusted as a journalist. We want people to read our stories and be informed and not get offended by them.

How do you do it? Keep your mouth shut! Get used to not expressing your own personal feelings. Interview both sides of the story to express equal view points. Now in extreme situations like an article mentioned about the end of World War II, you wouldn’t interview a Nazi because they already committed an evil doing.
