Stuart Scott

October 13th, 2015

Stuart Scott gives fellow cancer patients reasons to fight.

Scott received the Jimmy V Award at the ESPY’s last night. He gave an acceptance speech that encouraged others to fight. Along with that, he personally thanked all of whom have helped him fight.

He mentioned that he has presented this very award before and remembers a specific quote from the late Coach Valvano. “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.”

“I have a responsibility to never give up,” states Scott. He then goes on to say that when he can’t fight, others will fight for him. Doctors, nurses and his family let him cry, while they give him constant loving support. In return he fights so he can be there for his family.

Scott expressed with passion how one doesn’t lose to cancer.”You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live.”

At the conclusion of his speech, getting emotional himself, he invited his tearful daughter to join him on stage to share a hug. At this point the emotional audience stood and applauded.

I read an article from the New York Times called, “Zimbabwe Won’t Charge Dentist Who Killed Cecil the Lion” written by Norimitsu Onishi. This article was about how Dr. Palmer, a dentist from Minnesota, isn’t being charged for killing Cecil and is able to return as a tourist to Zimbabwe.

Yes, this story is newsworthy because the killing happened just this past summer, so it’s recent. It was also a very popular story and people will be wanting to know the verdict.

The audience would be anyone who was a fan of Cecil the lion, or anyone who followed the story and would like to know the verdict.

The lead seemed to be the first 2 paragraphs. It gives a brief background of what happened during the summer. The second paragraph talked about what the ruling is.

Since this ruling was just announced today, I’m assuming there will be more details to come about why Zimbabwe is letting Dr. Palmer even return after being called a “foreign poacher”. Even though they found Palmer’s documentation for the hunt to be real, I would like to know Zimbabwe’s reasoning a bit more and would like to know how Palmer feels about this.

Theo Bronkhorst played a part in the killing as well, but is only briefly mentioned. That makes sense though because the purpose of the article was the ruling on Palmer. I like that they did it that way.

Dr. Blaine Interview

October 6th, 2015

Morningside’s English and Modern Languages Professor Patrick Blaine almost missed out on meeting his now wife.

Professor Blaine has a love for traveling around the world. Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Vietnam, and Chile are just a handful of the places he has been to. He has even lived in Spain and Chile, so he is very fluent in both English and Spanish.

In Spain he discovered a love for the ocean. However, in Chile he discovered a love for a woman. In February 2001. Blaine went on a wooden church tour, which he didn’t really want to go on.

“I’ve seen enough churches in Spain,” he commented.

Turns out it was a good thing he went on this tour. The tour guide Monica, is now his wife.

“She said it was love at first site. For me it was more like flirting at first site,” said Blaine.

Both of them are big movie fanatics, so it seems fitting that there first date was to see a movie. The couple married on July 4, 2002. They stayed in Chile for a little while and then moved to the U.S. However, when they retire they would like to live back in Chile.

The couple is expecting their first child this coming February. It will be a boy. This child will be raised to be literate in both English and Spanish.

I read an article from the NY Times written by Michael Barbaro called, “Pitchy, Mean and Powerful: How Donald Trump Mastered Twitter for 2016”. It was about how Trump is using social media for his campaign and how effective it has been for him.

My initial reaction to the headline was “who cares? how does this relate to politics?”.  In a way I do think this is newsworthy because Trump could be setting a precedent for how future presidential campaigns are handled and covered.

The audience is to all ages, but specifically more towards the younger generation because it talks about the power of old media and the new power of new media, such as Twitter.

The first paragraph completely threw me. It talked about actress Kim Novack, whom I have never heard of, and how she was urged to attend last years Academy Awards. Then the next paragraphs went on about how Donald Trump tweeted that Novack needed to sue her plastic surgeon. Even though this lead confused me, it certainly got my attention, because I was unaware of this Oscars story. The actual lead was the sixth paragraph.

I would have organized it a little differently. However the story with Novack did seem important to me. I did like reading his tweets along with Clinton’s and Bush’s tweets. The examples showed how many more followers Trump has and that makes him seem more “powerful”.

Twinkie

September 29th, 2015

The dark yellow, minion shaped, (rectangular shape with rounded edges was tantalizing me through the clear Hostess wrapper.

The wrapper crinkled as I pulled the edge of it open.

As a grabbed the twinkie cream from the bottom stuck to my thumb, so I licked it off. My forefinger made an imprint on the soft moist sponge-like cake. It’s squishy and sticky.

The yellow sponge cake perfectly complimented the smooth thick white cream that was in the middle.

Whenever I eat a twinkie, I think of how my Mom never bought them for me and how upset that still makes me. The first time I had a twinkie was when I was visiting my Mom and twin brothers in an Omaha Hospital. We were in the hospital cafeteria and my Mom, even though she would never buy them, encouraged me to try one.

Twinkie’s are a rare treat for me, so I’m excited whenever I get one.

Since the cream is sweet and rich, I couldn’t eat more than one at a time.

It took me five regular size bites to eat it in.

I have an after taste and parts of cake stuck in my teeth.

Local band Don Juan is set to record this spring.

“We will be recording this spring, ” says John Dodge, guitarist, singer and songwriter. “There will be a product on the streets–on the airwaves, we hope–by the end of the summer.” Dodge has been with bandmate Don Cooper for almost 3 years.

Cooper had always been interested in singing and playing the guitar. However, he was on the fence for being in this type of profession. “I fought it for three years…I don’t think I can make a living doing it. So I’m just going to be an English teacher just in case,” said Cooper.

Last summer Don Juan had the opportunity to do a show in the New York club, Trax. They played with Jackson Browne and James Taylor, who are now both fans and supporters of Don Juan.

Dodge says, ” Nobody settles for anything less than the best.” The group squabbles “about fine points,” but the “creative tension” builds as the group molds a new song.

Dodge also comments, ” Writing songs isn’t easy…it’s tough, but it’s worth it.”

I read an article called, “NASA Says Signs of Liquid Water Flowing on Mars” written by Kenneth Chang. It was about how liquid was found on Mars and how it supports the “Life on Mars” claim.

I do think this story is newsworthy just because life on Mars has been a topic for years.

The audience may be for the two previous generations before me, who witnessed the Space Race and Neil Armstrong becoming the first man to walk on the moon. They would be the people to be more excited about space.

For some reason I thought the lead was funny. I’m sure others will think so too. However, after reading the lead I didn’t feel excited about reading the rest of the article.

Some of the scientific names were unfamiliar to me. I don’t know in depth details on Mars and just the science of space in general. I got bored as I continued to read on about different scientists and what they have discovered in previous years. I also had never heard of any of the scientists.

Scavenger Hunt- Knock-Knock Joke

September 24th, 2015

My objective was to find a good knock-knock joke. I went to the Krone Advising Center in search of a stranger and met Emily Keim, whom I asked for a good joke. I approached her  with a smile and explained the situation. She smiled and agreed to tell a knock-knock joke.

“Knock-knock”

“Who’s there?”

“Dwaine”

“Dwaine who?”

“Dwaine the bath-tub because I’m drowning!” said Keim.

Keim said that she had learned that joke from her sister and that it was her go-to joke.

When asked if she considered herself the funny person in the group, she said that she was and is the one to crack jokes.

At first Keim seemed to be taken off guard with my sort of unusual request. She was sitting she I got to her level to make better eye-contact. I complimented her joke which seemed to relief the little bit of tension there was. After the joke I had my follow up questions, which she seemed happy to answer and was smiling as well.

To make sure I quoted the joke correctly, I repeated it back to her.

At the end of the interview, I thanked her for her time and help.

Tom Brady Does Not Have to Serve Four-Game Suspension, NFL Appeals

By Rachael Arnts

Judge Richard Berman ruled in favor of Tom Brady to not get suspended due to evidence deficiencies. The NFL appealed the decision.

The big question over the summer was whether or not Brady would have to serve a four game suspension at the beginning of the regular season. After seven months of waiting for answers, Judge Richard Berman announced his ruling on September 3rd. Tom Brady won over Goodell, who has filed an appeal.

According to ESPN.com, Brady shared his exciting news of his win on Facebook by thanking his family and supporters. He also apologized to anyone he may have hurt during this legal process; especially the league that should not have to endure matters like this. He wishes for all the attention to go back to the players and coaches of the game.

“I don’t think it has been good for our sport — to a large degree, we have all lost.” stated Tom Brady.

According to CNN, Judge Berman did not care for the way Goodell handled the investigations and said he found, “several significant legal deficiencies”. These included the NFL not giving Brady equal access rights to files for investigation, along with not giving him enough notice about the suspension.

Goodell says he is grateful for Judge Berman taking on the case, but has to respectfully disagree with him. As Commissioner he wants to institute fairness between all thirty-two teams CNN states.

Last season, during the AFC Championship, New England Patriots starting Quarterback Tom Brady was initiated accusations. He was blamed to be aware of cheating by having the football being deflated below regulation standards. The “Deflategate” hype picked up when the Patriots won the 49th Super Bowl. Roger Goodell the Commissioner of the National Football League took Brady to court in Foxborough, MA.

According to CNN, Roger Goodell stated, “While the legal phase of this process continues, we look forward to focusing on football and the opening of the regular season.”

According to NFL.com, Brady can still play during the appeal process. If Brady had been suspended, the opening ceremony of the Kick-off game would have been different since the Super Bowl MVP could not have participated.

NFL.com also mentioned that Goodell will not make the customary first game appearance. Instead, he will watch the game at his home because he wants all of the focus to be on the actual opening game between the Patriots and the Steelers.

According to the New York Times, Brady is ready for “Deflategate” to be in the past. He wants his team, as well as himself, to be focused on this season as reigning Super Bowl Champs. Brady respects Goodell’s decision for appealing because it was his right to do so. However, this will cause the case to go on for months to come.

“I think that’s just part of this process,” he said. “My part is to get ready to play football, and that’s what I’m really excited to do.” Brady said according to the New York Times.

I read an article from the New York Times called,”Trading Meat for Tires as Bartering Economy Grows in Greece”. This was about how Greece’s economy is crashing and people are turning to bartering and bartering websites.

Yes, this is newsworthy. The headline makes the story seem bizarre. It can be relevant to people in other countries who are looking for ways to save money. Also more countries may have to fall back on this technique.

The audience would be anyone who may be in desperate need of finding alternatives to spending what little money the have.

The lead was just a story of how one guy was able to get tires. It didn’t really relate to the in-depth analysis of Greece’s economic economy.

I would have liked to see some more bizarre bartering examples. That is what the headline perceived the story to be so I got interested. Instead I got this really long lessons of Greece’s economic crises and how there is a website to do bartering,

I would have stuck to the bizarre bartering stories like the butcher and his tires and talked about the website, Tradenow. I would have left out a good majority of Greece’s economy because I personally don’t care about that. If it really has an affect on me I feel like I would have heard about this earlier.
