The Surprising Sacking of Thomas Tuchel

After letting Thomas Tuchel, now ex-coach of Chelsea, spend almost 300 million dollars in the last transfer window, Chelsea’s board has already decided to sack the head coach. Having lost their first champions league game against Dinamo Zagreb and standing with 10 points after 6 games in the Premier League, some might find this sacking deserved. However, looking at the bigger picture, Tuchel lost 16 games over his 100 games in charge. Also, he was the boss over the last transfer window. Where clubs normally have specialized transfer strategics, Chelsea put Tuchel on charge of this window after the club went through many changes. Meaning, this transfer window brought in players which were wanted by Thomas Tuchel himself and who wanted to play for especially him.

The audience, soccer supporters in general, was completely surprised by the sacking of this coach. This action was a talking point at our soccer table in the cafeteria this morning. Besides this, which also makes this action news, is the fact that people have different opinions on this, making it interesting. The sacking of a coach of any big club is always news and a talking point. This sacking had the surprise effect in addition to it, making it have a very effective lead.

Where the story is mostly objective, stating facts and background information about this sacking, there are also some subjective parts to it. One paragraph for instance starts with: “I get the logic, even though it’s far from a good idea.” Not only does this sentence start with ‘I’, but it also states that the author does not think this was a good idea. For the rest, this article is not missing anything as it tells much background information in addition to describing the recent event well. Even I, as a big soccer reader, learned new information from this article.
