Gersson Rosas out as Timberwolves’ president of basketball operations (NEWS Comment 9.23)

In a move that shocked a lot of people, Gersson Rosas was fire on Wednesday, this coming months after new owners took over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The article start with the explaining of the firing, and who reported it first. Then comes the meat of article wear NBA beat writer Ramona Shelbourne writes, “Sources close to the situation told Shelburne that incoming owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez had been evaluating Rosas’ performance this summer and had planned to relieve him of his duties at some point. According to sources, that process sped up the more they learned about the deterioration of his relationship with Gupta and after evidence was brought to them about a consensual romantic relationship between Rosas and another team employee.”

This raised the question to me of why it was so shocking if the Timberwolves had been playing it for a while now, also why the Wolves do it now. However, the article never answered that question.

The article just goes on to talk about how Rosas’s teams were performing and the stats behind before rapping up the article saying who the new president is, and his previous experience, “Sachin Gupta was hired by Rosas after stints in the front office with the Pistons, the 76rs and the Rockets. With degrees from MIT and Stanford, Gupta is an analytics ace who began his career at ESPN, where he developed the popular website feature known as the “NBA Trade Machine” that calculates the salary-cap ramifications of any potential deal that a fan wants to plug in.”

Yes I think this massive news to sports fan because a lot of us weren’t expecting, I also think the writer did a good job of explaining the situation but failed to answer some of my questions that I think a lot of fans would have.

The Scavenger hunt & Interview with JJ Marlow about Sports

Today, I was assigned to walk around campus and talk to people. The first thing I did was follow Dylan Hamill to Dimmit Hall and listen to him talk to someone about volley. I then decided to walk to Lewis Hall and talk to JJ Marlow about sports.

I got the chance to talk to JJ Marlow, the Director of Annual Scholarship Fund here at Morningside about youth and college sports.

“I feel like the difference between college and youth sports is the coaching” Said JJ Marlow, “I think at times youth coaches put in less than colleges and at times can have preferences that are based on who they like not who is performing the best”.

JJ Marlow was a softball player here at Morningside, and she had great perspective on the youth and college sports atmosphere.

JJ said, “I think I learned a lot more about sports during my college days then I did my youth sports days.”

I also took a picture of a Morningside flag in JJ’s office.

THE NIL SUCCESS (story #1 final)

The NCAA on July 1st, 2021 passed name image and likeness rights for collegiate athletes underneath the NCAA banner. This was a severe shift in what was previously allowed.

This is revolutionary, as rules around NIL have prohibited athletes from profiting off of their collegiate fame. “The rules kept them squarely under the NCAA’s “amateur” guise, but not anymore” Says SBNations’s Sydney Umari.

Formally, players were limited to making money in form of their scholarships, any other form of money making by athletes was deemed to be an NCAA violation. Despite the NCAA making nearly a billion dollars in revenue every single year. Yet the NCAA still refused to give the athletes a piece of that billion-dollar pie.

As Sydney Umari said “not anymore”.

However, the road to NIL rights was not easy, it took local, state, and even federal interference for the NIL rules to finally be passed by the NCAA, starting in California and their “fair to pay to play” act. The billl, that will go into effect until 2023, prohibits schools from punishing those who accept endorsement deals while in college.

This one act set off a snowball effect that eventually led to the NCAA receiving a supreme court opinion that made it clear the NCAA would face significant legal issues if its rules on NIL rights were not changed.

“College sports is in the midst of its most significant changes in a generation,” said ESPN’s Dan Murphy, “athletes are now provided with varying degrees of new protections and opportunities to make money by selling their name, image and likeness (NIL) rights.”

The NCAA football season has now started and to say that the NIL rules have helped NCAA athletes would be an understatement. While the star QB’s like Spencer Rattler, D.J. Uiagalelei, Bryce Young, and C.J. Stroud will undoubtedly get the multi-million-dollar deals and benefit most from a monetary standpoint, it’s not just stars of college football that will benifit from the new NIL rules.

“Brands are showing strong attraction to all kinds of aspirational kids you have never heard of, in all kinds of surprising and pleasant places.” Said Washington Post’s Sally Jenkins.  For example a football player at Jackson State, Antwan Owens is getting support from hair company. He will not be a frist round draft pick nor will he have the colliagate fame like the big time quarterbacks yet he is still going to get paid for his NIL.  A wideout for Arkanas and his dogs are getting brand deals on social media. Even from a buisnes side, “The deodorant company Degree has signed up 14 athletes with inspiring backstories, many of whom you have never heard of, for a “#BreakingLimits” campaign. And Marshall offensive lineman Will Ulmer is getting paid to play his guitar onstage.”  Said Sally Jenkins.

As a fan of college athletes, I couldn’t be happier that these college stars are now able to benefit from their NIL. It’s been long overdue. As someone who hated that  college stars could not take advantage of this rule, I hope that the schools take the time to support their athletes in these new changes and that athletes take full advantage of this opportunity because it’s been a long road to get here.

(news comment 9.17) Josh Jacobs out, Kenyan Drake in

Vegas running back Josh Jacobs has been ruled out of Sunday’s game at the Steelers as the Pro Bowler has missed practice all week because of toe and ankle injuries.

This is a massive blow for the Raiders as they already have had troubles running the ball.

The article later goes on to give quotes from players and coaches before rapping the article up saying “He missed one game last season, when his yards-per-carry average dropped to 3.9 while he ran for 1,065 yards and 12 TDs. Last week, Jacobs said his practice workload would be reduced to keep him fresh for games.”

Again this is news for sports fans but not for the ‘normal’ public. I think the article did a good job with there lead and presenting the information in invert pyramid fashion.

ARMED ROBBERY, $400 GONE (Lead Day 2)

Last night around 8:30, two men wearing ski mask and with guns robbed BJ’s Drug Convince Store.

Two men entered, while one held a gun on the owner, Barney Joseph, Jr., 43, 1625 while the other removed $382.65 from the cash register. The two men fled in a car parked at the curb.

The police department told us that Mr. Joseph kept a pistol under the counter but decided not to use it. Joseph told the police the robbery was over in less than a minute and that he could have reached for the gun but felt it unwise.

This is the second time BJ’s Drug has been robbed, as it was robbed 25 years prior. “Yes, Dad (Barney Joseph, Sr.) resisted, I guess.” Says Barney Joseph, Jr “Anyway, they found him shot to death, his own gun in his hand, and a bullet in the store’s ceiling. I’d rather part with my money than my life,” he said.

Ongoing protest at Backwater University for Teaching Evolution

Because Backwater University biology class is teaching evolution a group of citizens is angry. Evolution has always been touchy subject especially with the churches. The group of angry protestors is led by Wilbur Straking, pastor of Ever-Faithful Church of the Living Water.

The Leaders Straking told Backwater Daily “I plan to lead a group of 25 dedicated Christians to the state capital next Monday to speak with legislators about this problem. We believe the teaching of evolution is against the principles of this Christian country, and we want to put a stop to it.”

The class they are objecting to is taught by Laura Cliff, associate professor of biology. She would comment on the group’s charges. The President would not comment either.

East Dakota Highway Patrol ordered ban of hand–held radar guns, yesterday in Sioux City because of links to cancer. (Lead Practice 1)

Because of concerns that troopers could develop cancer from long term exposure to the radiation waves emitted by the devices the East Dakota Highway patrol ordered ban of hand–held radar guns. The ban was ordered as a precaution while studies are conducted into the possible links between cancer and the use of such guns.

The ban will affect 70 radar guns that will be removed from service. State troopers will continue to use radar units with transmitters mounted on the outside of their cruisers.

Adam Smith a spokesman for the East Dakota Highway Patrol said in a statement “The feeling here is to err on the side of caution until more is known about the issue,” Smith said. “The whole situation is under review.”

The move is the first of its kind by a state police agency. It comes after three municipal officers in Central City filed workman’s compensation claims, saying they developed cancer from using the hand–held units.

This article is about the massively known pregame show know has college day headed for Ames, Iowa for the second time in two years for the CY-Hawk game between Iowa and Iowa State. The announcement came following Iowa’s dominant performance over Indiana and Iowa State barely sneaking a win out over inferior opponent of UNI. The article concludes with summaries of the last couple of meetings between Iowa and Iowa State. The article states that Iowa has won 5 of the last meetings in a row and the fact that the game wasn’t played last year due to covid. Compared to “normal” or national wide sports news this is massive for those in the state of Iowa because of the national televised show being in Ames and the proximity to Sioux City. Also, the article gives a show start time and a game start for those who may want to go to the game. While the article is short it’s important to get the information out to as many people as possible.

Sources: New England Patriots cut Cam Newton; Mac Jones to start

ESPN: https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/32119363/sources-new-england-patriots-cut-cam-newton-mac-jones-start

Cam Newton’s release came as shocking news. After an impressive preseason by rookie Mac Jones where Mac played 68 more snap’s then the now ex-patriot Cam Newton, who was cut early Tuesday morning. Mike Reiss’s article laid out the events that led up to Cam’s release, Cam’s reaction, as well as the identity of AFC East now that Mac Jones is the starter in New England.

This isn’t the first time the Patriots made surprising moves regarding their quarterbacks. They famously let Tom Brady sign with Buccaneers during the 2020 offseason. The Patriots had also previously traded backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the 49ers in 2017. This isn’t mentioned in the article which I thought was a mistake, because it would have established a pattern of shocking moves by the Patriots organization.

After establishing the fact that the release of Newton was official, the author switches gears and states that New England’s head coach had said previously that Cam would have to earn the starting role. The article then provided Mac Jones and Cam Newton’s preseason stats. Which was a smart inclusion because it gives reason as to way Cam was released and Mac was named the starter.

This was followed up by the current QB situation in New England and the AFC East as a whole. It is presumed that Mac Jones will be the starter, Bryan Hoyer the backup, and Jarrett Stidham the third stringer. Later on the author should tweet that stated of the four starting QB’s, there is none over the age of 25 in the AFC East. Mac Jones will be 23 next week.

The author also provides Cam Newtons response to the release where he said in a Instagram post “I really appreciate all the love and support during this time but I must say … please don’t feel sorry for me. I’m good.”

I believe the author did a great job in creating a brief look into what the current situation is with Cam Newton. With it being a sports article and the situation still unfolding there was no reason to gather additional information or to do more investigating into what the situation is. However, the author could’ve speculated on what the next move for Cam Newton or the Patriots might be. I also think the title of the article is exactly what the remainder of the article needs. The title is straight to the point, which sports headlines should be.

I believe that this article is definitely news to a sports fan, because Cam Newton is former MVP and despite his lack of great performances in recent years, Cam is still one of the most well-known players in the NFL. However, I can see how someone could say that this isn’t news because it is sports and there are more important things going on in the world.
