istock_000003725373xsmallBy Dominique Swanson—As finals approach, the imminent doom of moving out of the dorms is also closing in. While summer being here is always a time to celebrate, the process of moving out is never fun. Here are some tips to make the process go a littler smoother and hopefully avoid wanting to rip your hair out.

Prepacking

Any amount of packing done prior to the day of move out is packing you do not have to do on that day. Any trips home are a great opportunity to get rid of some things ahead of time. Packing away all clothing expect for what you need in your time left is also very beneficial. Just as it is with writing a long paper, the more you spread it out, the less stressful it is when the time comes.

Prep Work

Cleaning out the refrigerator and taking out the trash are things that must be done in order to checkout. By defrosting your fridge ahead of time, it becomes one less worry when the time comes. Also, start taking down decorations. They are not necessary to living therefore it make one more thing that can be done in advance.

Sort Through Your Things

Moving out is always a great time to go through clothing and other items to determine if you want to keep them. The more things you get rid of at school, the less you have to carry home. Sell all unwanted textbooks and give away or sell clothing you will never wear anymore. Every bit helps.

Be Prepared

Make sure you have tubs or boxes and other necessary items to move. You do not want the day to come and realize you have nothing to carry all your things in. Make sure you have a truck or a larger vehicle lined up for any larger items like futons. This step is absolutely vital because otherwise it is impossible to move.

Let’s face it, moving sucks. However, these tips should help make the process a little less painful and help get a jump start on summer vacation.
