By Dominique Swanson–‘The Spectacular Now’ is a drama/romance that stars Miles Teller as a party-loving senior in high school whose girlfriend just dumped him.
After a night of getting blackout drunk, he meets the character played by Shailene Woodley, a ‘nice-girl’ type who has a completely different lifestyle than his own.
This film follows these two characters as they begin dating and suffer the struggles of having two completely different goals in life.
While there is a solid concept behind the film, the unconventional romance between an on-his-way alcoholic who lives for the now and the slightly nerdy, sweet girl who has big future plans, the movie falls short of delivering a viewing experience that keeps your attention.
Many points in the movie you find yourself waiting for something to happen. Yet, all you get is watching two teenagers hangout and do day-to-day activities like going to school.
The most blunt way of putting this movie is boring. It is a struggle finding the purpose, other than watching things fall apart over and over.
This movie has a rating of 7.2/10 on IMDb, but in no way deserves it. It is slow paced and is more like watching actual film of a high-school student having a difficult life than viewing a cinematic experience.
The ending only works to maintain the idea that there is nothing actual happening or a point to be proved, it just sort of tapers off with no real conclusion.
Overall, this film seems to provide no real value in an artistic or lesson teaching qualities and is not recommended.
