‘Men’terest in Pinterest

pinterestBy Natalie Waller–Where did you get that recipe? I love your nails, where did you get that idea? That’s a great quote, where did you find it?

The answer is Pinterest. Women everywhere have taken to the Pinterest phenomenon, but men need to join the club as well.

Pinterest has everything. You can search any key word and something is bound to come up for you to see.  It’s still a new idea, though men do not think it is for them. Men want to be known as manly not creative. They need to get over this idea though. Pinterest offers ideas that could boost men higher in their jobs, especially teaching.

Susie Lubbers, an education professor, asks all her students to download Pinterest. She said, “Whether you are male or female, it is a great resource for people, no matter what they are looking for.” She added, “It’s a shame that Pinterest has the all-female connotation because there is so much information on the website.”

An education major, Josh Mohr, recently made a Pinterest account for himself. He said at first he did not want to download it because all he could think of was women “pinning” all day and night and he did not want to be seen as feminine if he started pinning. Asked how he felt after he had tried Pinterest, he said, “I did not realize the things that could be useful for men on Pinterest.”

If men feel so uncomfortable about pinning, there is also a private board option so people do not see what they are keeping for later. Also, men need to realize they do not need to follow anyone on Pinterest in order to use the site. They could make a profile for themselves and then simply search topics they are interested in.

Men should be taking advantage of this great opportunity to find new and creative ideas. It may have a female connotation right now, but it could be changed easily if more men are open about how great Pinterest is.
