Final Profile- December 5

December 5th, 2018

Born in Tennessee Farris has been swimming. Since he was nine, his only regret not starting swimming sooner. Farris has had a treasured career when he broke the Wisconsin state record in the 50, and was the first man to break 21 seconds in the process. Farris was also able to swim at the collegiate level. Farris had a very successful time while at Iowa, Farris was able to be successful in both personal events and team events. During his years Iowa, he had several All-American honors (1981 in the 400-yard freestyle relay and 1982 in the 800-yard relay). Farris has been around successful teams, he has an individual Big Ten championship in the 100-yard freestyle. While at Iowa Farris was a team captain as well as swimming on to Big Ten Championship teams in 1981 and 1982. After Iowa Farris made the important decision to go back to school to get his education degree from The University of South Dakota. That decision would play big in Farris’s future.

Farris had been around in several locations as a Swim Coach before landing at Morningside on August 29, 2012. As we sit down for the interview, the pool is quiet behind the office of Head Morningside Swimming Coach Bryan Farris. The reason it is 8:15am, one of the few time during the day when Farris has free time. Farris has done something to help the athletes where he has made it so there are multiple practice times. Farris who is often up as early as 4:30 am as someone who has an internal alarm clock.

One big thing Farris talks about is how important it is for athletes to have fun and once their career is completed to stick with the sport in one way or another. Farris who has been involved in swimming in one way or another since he was nine is a great example of how you can do just that stay involved in the sport. The opportunity to coach the future of the sport is something that Farris cherishes. Farris has worked his way into the recruiting scene noting that the opportunity to coach at Morningside was something that was a once in a lifetime chance. He finds frustration when he cannot get all of the athletes he tries to recruit. Farris finds that he has an easy time selling the Morningside experience stating,” That Morningside does a great job of assisting students after they leave and are looking for a job.” Farris has been able to draw in some great recruits in the past.

Farris is a great member of the Morningside coaching staff, as he has had success with his teams. Suzanne Gonzalez was a National Champion last season, and even after losing her this season Farris was able to bring in a great transfer Grace Nordquist. The swim team head coach certainly has a recipe for success.

As the exploration continues towards Mars one question and possible problem still lies ahead, Could there be life on Mars? On Monday NASA launched into its first-of-its-kind probe that will go deeper into the planets interior. The probes goal is to analyze the planet as a whole, anywhere from listening to Marsquakes to thickness of the mantle/crust. The plan carries into 2020 when NASA and the ESA (European Space Agency) plan to launch ExoMars Rover with a focus of attempting to find life on Mars. The big concern is that if humans move to Mars whatever life is on Mars would become extinct. The life scientist think to have revealed is bacteria, known as Martian Bacteria.

This week I decided to use a think article this week to change it up a little bit. This article certainly did not disappoint. This is a great informative article. This article tells a lot of things that I personally did not known. The article shows what the upcoming plans for Mars are. One part of the article that did not overly surprise me was the notion that if humans would inhabit Mars they would drive the Mars life to extinction. Overall the article proved to be very interesting, and well done.

https://www.foxnews.com/us/ex-nfl-player-wields-sword-during-argument-at-youth-basketball-event-police-say

A former NFL player threatened an individual at a youth basketball event last month. The incident occured during a meeting for the travel team Matawan Aberdeen Middle School on October 5th. The altercation was seemingly caused by drugs or alcohol according to the police report. Jones also left a threatening voicemail to the parent of the 11-year-old football player. “We are going to blitz every [expletive] play until your guy comes out of the game,” Rogers allegedly said in the voicemail, according to the Asbury Park Press. Rogers was fired from his former job at St John Vianney High School, he had played for the Seattle Seahawks, Buffalo Bills, and Miami Dolphins.

This news article is another example of traveling league parents/coaches going overboard. These kids are only 10 years old, and the parents fight among themselves more than the players do. This article does a good job of showing what NFL players/ celebrities do once they are out of their profession.

Last Conversation-example

November 15th, 2018

Last night on KMSC Fusion 93 I had my last conversation. The conversation was during the radio show “The Intimate Roundtable” when I was chatting with Ty Van Es.  The end of the show was the most interesting part of the conversation was the end of the talk. Ty and I discussed how bad the Iowa Hawkeyes and Colorado Buffalos are playing. Both teams are struggling mightily. The conversation held a ton of emotion and frustration. My side of the conversation was a harsh rant about how bad Colorado is. Ty was wearing an Iowa Hawkeyes stocking cap, and sweatshirt from Morningside College. Ty stated,” The Hawkeyes are going to be very mediocre at 7-5, its disappointing.”

https://www.foxnews.com/travel/flight-attendant-draws-window-for-passenger-stuck-in-windowless-seat

The story talks about a flight attendant who was faced with a challenge on a flight. A passenger was having a fit about the fact that they did not have a window seat. Now flight attendants are some of the most patient people on the planet. They have to deal with whiny, and cranky people. So this flight attendant draws a window on a piece of paper, and stuck it next to the individual. People absolutely loved the action, the action has been spread all over twitter. Many people praise the flight attendant saying, “That’s really clever. Great thinking by the attendant.” The hashtag #whereismywindow has been trending on twitter.

This is a feel good story. The story shows how a flight attendant rather than getting mad at the individual just gave them a “window”. The story also brings up the grudge people have against flights that take away window. The story shows an interesting angle of people getting their small children on a flight with hopes of a window and not getting it. The story also shows how big stories can blow up on social media. The problem can be caused more and more as the flights cram more seats into the cabin of a plane.

UPDATED ABBY STORY

November 13th, 2018

Morningside sophomore Abby Koch added Mass Communications as a second of two majors. She already was a graphic design major. As a graphic design major Abby has to exhibit patience very often. Last week Abby was involved with a stressful event- Election Night Coverage 2018. Abby found frustration with how late she was asked to do the graphics for the endeavor. She also had to change these graphics quite a bit. Koch stated,” Graphics are a hassle.” Even with all of that work Koch is working on a double major. Koch commented on adding the second major saying,”I added it so I can hate my life twice as much and be twice as poor.” She was drawn into the Mass Communications department after taking Introduction to Mass Communications. Koch is also very involved on campus where on top of being a double major she is a part of Alpha Lambda Delta. Alpha Lambda Delta is the women honor society where Koch is the social media chair. In that position she publicizes what the “geek not greek” group does. She is also looking forward to her upcoming Mayterm to Iceland. She has been working hard over the summer to help fund this journey. Some of the work she did was at Whispering Creek Golf Course where she was a moving target on the golf course and a glorified trash person. Finally Koch talked about how she finally landed on Morningside as her college of choice saying,”She likes the small size and felt like home, even being a commuter it feels like home.”
