I would say the frame is simply showing the 1984 season of the Dolphins, along with the frustration of the Dolphins after the super bowl loss, The story delves in to Dan Marinos past as well.
In the frame is the stats of the 1984, Marinos past, the frustration of the 1984 Super Bowl, overall frustration after the super bowl loss
The only thing that was left out is the very finite details about Marino

That’s a fun story, Jon. I had to force myself to stop reading. I never did hit what I thought might be a nut graf. It reminds me a lot of the classic NFL film documentaries. All the foreboding and foreshadowing at the beginning sets it up like a good short story.
Same for the frame. I get the impression they are setting Marino up for a fall. He was overconfident. But since most readers already know what happened (I actually can’t remember) the writer can get away with a focus on mood and story-telling.
