Creme de Pirouline- The first bite is a loud crunch. The chocolate flavor is very strong and delicious. The crispy texture is melting away, and the chocolate flavor takes over.  The brown straw like object, had a scent of strong chocolate.

Twinkies- Note heard chorus of “Mmmmmm”s while other ate the Twinkies. My personal experience was Wow! Hostess did a great job mixing the creme flavor and chocolate. My comment would be more creme flavor. The Twinkie left a creme trail in the bottom of the package. Also the Twinkies size has gotten smaller

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/dr-katherine-hoover-accused-fueling-west-virginia-s-opioid-crisis-n909366

A doctor in West Virginia has relit an opioid crisis, her name Katherine Hoover. However according to Hoover she did not do anything wrong. Hoover issued more than 335,130 prescriptions for painkillers. Over a little more than nine years she issued about 130 a day if she worked a seven day work week. This is all taking place in Williamson, West Virginia. However hoover is getting away with what she did. Here’s why Hoover has essentially was too loud and too crazy for the prosecutors to both with her. She escaped to the Bahamas while many of her colleagues faced prison.

The lead for the article is very interesting. The lead highlights how many shots of opioid she gave. With the stat of nearly 130 per day that is an insane amount of shots. The other intriguing part of the article is where they explain why she will get away with what she has done. Lawyer James Cagle, “She sure as hell got away with this,” Cagle said. “She basically wore the prosecutors out. She found that if you’re crazy enough and loud enough and just undaunted, they don’t know what to do with that. They decided she was too much trouble and walked away.”

Scavenger Hunt-Comm 208 Example

September 20th, 2018

Today I interviewed two random strangers. The objective was to collect a signature on a post it note and ask somebody about their pet peeve. I asked Sebastian Tovan about his pet peeve. He answered but only after he gave a very strange look, as I stated I was a journalist from Comm 208 he eased up. Tovan stated,” A pet peeve of mine is people chewing with their mouth open. The sound really bothers me.”

The second objective was getting a signature on a post it note. The look I received was priceless, and I broke the ice with a discussion on weather.  Colin Thimes was the individual I interviewed, he was on his way to practice xylophone.

I did achieve both objectives, and the Hunt was a success. Overall the first stranger interview went well, the interviews I am used to I don’t take notes. The interviews will be a good experience down the stretch.

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/09/19/pete-carroll-cites-his-impatience-as-why-seahawks-have-gotten-away-from-running-game/

Pete Carroll has Seattle Seahawks falling out of the gate at a 0-2 record. The teams most recent defeat came at the hand of the Bears on Monday Night Football.  A pattern that has developed over the first two weeks is Seattle’s lack of running attempts. Over the first two weeks the Seahawks have run 33 out of 119 offensive plays. That’s an astounding 27 percent run vs pass selection. Carroll stated that he became impatient and that swayed his play selection. Later on Carroll stated,” Were just trying to keep the guy fresh is what it amounts to, and he played it really well.” The Seahawks look to improve as they take on Dallas at home Sunday at 3:25 CST

The article is interesting in that they lead grabs my attention because as someone who doesn’t really like Carroll it is amusing that he is impatient. The idea that Carroll’s impatience is the reason Seattle is 0-2 is laughable. The reason is that Seattle has faced two good defenses. The play selection makes Seattle easy to predict. The play selection should be much closer to 50-50.

Hurricane Florence to Hammer Southeast/Mid-Atlantic FINAL VERSION

September 18th, 2018

Hurricane Florence to Hammer Southeast/Mid-Atlantic

Hurricane Florence could reach Category Five status as it hammers the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic early Friday morning. The storm currently sits as a Category Four with wind speeds of 140 miles per hour. The National Hurricane Center doesn’t think the storm is done intensifying, stating, “None of the guidance suggest that Florence has peaked in intensity.” The storm is projected to hit the coast on Friday.

The storm has caused the mandatory evacuation orders in the states of Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The mandatory evacuation order takes effect Tuesday at noon in eight counties along South Carolina’s 187-miles of coastline. State government offices, medical facilities even schools will be closed in 26 counties in preparation for the storm. South Carolina governor Henry McMaster said at a press conference,” This is a real hurricane we have coming. We don’t want to risk one South Carolina life.”

According to The Washington Post one of the many concerns with this storm is how far inland the rain and flooding is projected to occur. Many locations could receive between six and twelve inches with isolated spot receiving twenty inches. The storm could stall over the Carolinas which is similar to what Hurricane Harvey did in Texas last year.

This has led to several state of emergencies, and coastal flood warnings/advisories. According to CNN over one million people have mandatory evacuations ahead of the storm. One year after historic storms that ravaged the American Gulf Coast and Puerto Rico last year, officials warned not to underestimate the threat the storm poses. Residents boarded up their homes, formed long lines at gas stations and emptied the shelves of hardware stores and supermarkets.

Update as of 9-18

People are continuing to be rescued and officials have begun to hand out food and supplies. According to The Guardian the death toll is up to 32 people including a one year old boy. North Carolina has been the hardest hit with 25 out of the 32 deaths.  Rescuers have saved nearly 700 people in the New Hanover county are near Wilmington.  Nearly 2600 have been saved across the state.

Here are some staggering stats from Hurricane Florence. The storm dumped 35.94 inches of rain which is the fourth highest on record. In comparison Hurricane Harvey dumped 60.58 inches of rain which is the most rain from a storm on record for storms hitting the US mainland. People are waiting in lines that stretch a half mile long. This wait is to get gas for home generators.

Hurricane Florence is approaching the Carolina’s. The hurricane could approach Category Five by the time it makes landfall. The storm currently sits as a Category Four storm with wind speeds of 140 miles per hour. The Hurricane Center is predicting that the storm will reach wind speeds of 155 miles per hour which would fall just two miles an hour short of the Category Five wind speeds.  The storm has exploded in intensity and the zone of hurricane force winds has also doubled. The storm has already caused states of emergency in three states and the mandatory evacuation in North Carolina for Dare and Hatteras County. The biggest concern has been labeled extremely dangerous is the triple threat: life threating storm surge, damaging hurricane force winds, and life threatening freshwater flooding from prolonged and exceptionally heavy rain. Those threats are very similar to Hurricane Harvey which hammered Texas last year and Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

The headline is a big attention grabber. Anytime you see Category Five Hurricane you know the storm will be a catastrophic one.  I liked how the story gave a lot of information on the hurricane and hurricanes in general. The big three threats helps people understand what the heck is going on for the aftermath of the storm and what is happening when the storm makes landfall. The usage of images and charts also sends a message of just how severe the storm will be. Finally the comparison at the end of the story is very valuable. When they compare Hurricane Florence to Harvey that just happened last year gives people a solid perception of how bad the storm has the potential to be.

Iowa Highway Patrol Bans Radar Guns

September 6th, 2018

Yesterday the Iowa Highway Patrol was ordered to ban handheld radar guns. The ban affects over 70 radar guns that are going to be withdrawn from service. However state troopers will continue to use transmitters that are mounted on the outside of their cars.

Adam Smith a spokesperson for the Iowa Highway Patrol said, “The feeling here is to err on the side of caution until more is known about the issue. The whole situation is under review.” The guns are being removed due to concerns that troopers could be developing cancer from longtime exposure to the radiation waves emitted from the devices.

The move is considered to be a first of its kind by a state police agency. It comes two months after three municipal officers in Cedar Rapids filed for workman’s compensation, saying they developed cancer from the devices.
