The audience of this article is sports fans in general, but could also be Milwaukee Brewers fans. I would say the lead is very effective, the statline of six for six and hitting for a cycle draws sports fans in. The point of view would be someone who is trying to tell the story to the audience. I think this article does a great job of getting it point across.

In summary the article talks about Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich hitting for the cycle against the Reds. A cycle is when a player hits for a single, double, triple, and home run all in one game. To make things even more impressive Yelich went 6 for 6 which is a very difficult thing to do. The Brewers ended up beating the Reds in a 13-12 shootout winning in the tenth inning.

News Comment Number One

The article I am doing for this week’s news comment is from NPR. The article is “How The Media Cover White Supremacists” written by Karen Grigsby Bates originally heard on “All Things Considered”. The interview discusses how to cover the white supremacist. News companies have been under fire for covering white supremacists, people claim by covering them the news outlets are fanning the flames. Some of the factors news should weight is normalizing the groups, by giving them the same air time as “normal” news. Many people argue some stories don’t have a side that needs to be covered, this leads to the debate of if you don’t cover it are you censoring the information from the general public. The other side to that is even if you do not cover it that does not mean it does not still happen. By covering the story you show the horror and just how bad it really is.  That could lead to the stopping of the organization. NPR interviewed at lead of a white supremacy group. The group wants the attention, why do you give them the attention. The white supremacy might be over covered, more journalist than protesters. By covering the event you could make the event bigger than it actually is.

The audience of this article is everyone. This is a good debate piece as it shows both sides of a controversial topic. I think the interview tries to see both sides of the topic. This is shown in how they talk about both sides of the topic. I think what would have been more interesting is if they had brought in two people that were very swayed one way or another and had the debate the topic.

From Glorified Trash Person to Iceland

August 23rd, 2018

Morningside sophomore Abby Koch added Mass Communications as a second of two majors. She already was a graphic design major. Koch commented on adding the second major saying,”I added it so I can hate my life twice as much and be twice as poor.” She was drawn into the Mass Communications department after taking Introduction to Mass Communications. Koch is also very involved on campus where on top of being a double major she is a part of Alpha Lambda Delta. Alpha Lambda Delta is the women honor society where Koch is the social media chair. In that position she publicizes what the “geek not greek” group does. She is also looking forward to her upcoming Mayterm to Iceland. She has been working hard over the summer to help fund this journey. Some of the work she did was at Whispering Creek Golf Course where she was a moving target on the golf course and a glorified trash person. Finally Koch talked about how she finally landed on Morningside as her college of choice saying,”She likes the small size and felt like home, even being a commuter it feels like home.”
