Technology that may Save Humanity

NASA’s DART completed its mission of redirecting an asteroid becoming the first time humanity has targeted and altered the orbit of a celestial object.

DART stands for ” Double Asteroid Redirection Test” and it was used to do just that. After 10 months of orbiting the Sun it smashed into Dimorphous, which is a small asteroid around seven million miles away from Earth.

Hitting Dimorphous with an object moving with the speed the DART was causes its orbit to change and could make the difference in a collision versus a near miss with Earth in the future.

This is important news because it gives the audience a feeling of safety. NASA is working to find ways to keep external threats to Earth from happening and this affects everyone and everything.

This technology will help to protect humanity for years to come alongside future preventative technologies that will be developed in the years to come as NASA and other scientists find ways to protect the Earth.

Footsies match turns into punishment for third grader Jonah Gleason.

In an interview with Jonah asking about his past criminal experience he shared with us one of his first from when he was just a child. He said “One time in third grade I was playing footsie and the teacher yelled at me and I had to sit out at recess.”

Recollecting on how the experience made him feel Jonah stated “I was F***ing pissed bro”. A day without recess was a harsh punishment but necessary for Jonah to reflect on his decisions.

It is his worst crime he’s ever committed and hopes to keep it that way.

“I am a better man now” Jonah grew from this experience and learned not assault women a young age. His footsie days are over for the foreseeable future.

Reflection

For my first paper I put most of my effort into my research and the topic I chose which was Scott Frost losing his job a few days before I wrote the paper. I wish I would have spent more of that time planning what the purpose of the paper was because it became an informative paper when it could have been more than that.

The most difficult part of this paper was knowing what to paraphrase and what to quote. I caught myself paraphrasing almost everything but that can become a problem because it makes it harder to cite in text as well as facing potential problems with plagiarism and just repeating the same information from other sources when they could just go to the original sources.

The biggest problem was deciding how to structure the paper with the quotes and paraphrasing. I was able to solve the problem with the help of the meeting I saw places where I could switch up the structure and the pieces that I should just quote the sources rather than paraphrase. From my draft to my final a lot of good changes were made.

Aaron Judge Joins 60-Homer Club

Aaron Judge joins Roger Maris and Babe Ruth as the only three American League players to hit sixty homeruns in a season.

These three players all had one thing in common, they all played for the Yankees. Babe Ruth in 1927 and Roger Maris in 1961.

Judge hit his sixtieth homerun on Tuesday night in the Bronx, reminding baseball fans that no one does celebration and big moments quite like the Yankees.

Judge also finished the night as the American League leader in each triple crown category. Only two other Yankee players have won a triple crown, Lou Gehrig and Mickey Mantle.

This is big news in the sports world. Only three people have ever done this without the use of performance enhancers and all three of them played for the Yankees. Athletes have been pushing the limits of what is considered possible forever, but for three athletes to be the only to achieve the feat all from the same place raises the question is it all coincidental.

Interviews

Interviews with Ashton Verdoorn and Frank Wallace at Morningside University gives a new motivational quote and selfie to add to the collection.

The first interview was with Frank Wallace who is the head coach for the track team at Morningside. He was in his office working away when surprised by a pop-interview. Skeptical at first, but willing to participate. His schedule for the day included planning a lift for the cross country team, and running workout for the track team. Also, he was creating a workout plan for a student who is returning to Morningside in the spring. Later today he plans to supervise the track practice and demonstrate proper lifting to the team.

Selfie with Coach Wallace

Back in the dorms after the interview with Wallace. Ashton Verdoorn was walking down the hallway with a packed bag. After questioning the reason for the packed back was discovered. Ashton just recently decided to drop out of college to pursue a job in the engineering field and return to school later to get an engineering degree that Morningside doesn’t offer.

Before he could leave he shared his favorite motivational quote with us. “Fucking never give up”. This seems to be an original quote as Ashton could not tell us where it was from.

Life on Mars?

NASA’s Perseverance rover has collected two rocks that could be remnants of ancient life on Mars.

The rocks were found in an ancient river in a crater. Several billion years ago the crater was a lake where life could have existed.

Kenneth A. Farley a professor of earth and planetary science, from Berkeley California, working on the mission said “I think it is safe to say that these are two of the most important samples that we’ll collect on this mission,”.

Once the rover returns to Earth with the samples in 2033 scientists will be able to to use state-of-the-art techniques to unveil what the samples are and what it means for potential life on Mars.

This is news because it is one of few pieces of evidence that have the potential to prove there is or was life on Mars at some point. Also, the sample gives hope to scientists searching for life beyond Earth. The return of the sample will be a day to look forward to.

The article does a good job explaining why this sample in particular is different from other samples that have been collected on Mars. This sample in particular has organic carbon molecules similar to what we might find in fossils on Earth. The Future is starting to look brighter for finding extraterrestrial life.

Nebraska’s Scott Frost Fired This Weekend

Nebraska’s head coach Scott Frost was fired after the team lost to Georgia Southern in their third game of the season on September 10th at home.

The biggest sports news of this week came after Nebraska’s second loss of the season, making their record 1-2. Frost has had a rough few seasons as the head coach for Nebraska, but making a change in leadership so early in the season is bold and costly.

Nebraska is coming off two consecutive losing seasons with Frost as head coach. In 2020 Nebraska went 3-5 and in 2021, 3-9. Frost’s best season as the head coach was in 2019 when the team went 5-7.

If Nebraska waited until October 1st to make the change would have saved the program a lot of money. “Getting rid of Scott Frost was worth $15 million to the Nebraska football program. The program could have saved half of that amount by waiting until October 1st.” This action was meant to make a statement.

Frost was hired as the head coach of Nebraska’s football program in 2017 after coaching UCF (University of Central Florida) to a 13-0 record and a win in the peach bowl. Frost also played at Nebraska back in 1995 as a transfer from Stanford. He quarterbacked his teams to a 24-2 record over the course of his time at Nebraska.

Letting go of Frost was not easy. Trev Alberts, the athletic director at Nebraska, said “Scott has poured his heart and soul into the Nebraska football program both as a quarterback and head coach, and I appreciate his hard work and dedication”. Alberts also ended the statement with “He’ll always be a Husker”.

Associate head coach Mickey Johnson will take over as the interim coach for the remainder of the season. This change will give “A new voice needed to give the players more opportunity”.

Sports Illustrated talks on how the early decision to make a shift in coaching will give Mickey Johnson a legitimate chance to shot to prove himself. Not only does the the decision to let Frost go now allow Mickey a chance to prove himself as a head coach, but also gives Nebraska an advantage in recruiting another coach for the following season. Trev Albert is the first AD entering the market for a new head coach this season.

This advantage is main reason for such an early decision to fire Frost. Multiple big names may be up for grabs after the 2022 season comes to an end.

Names like Matt Campbell, Mark Stoops, Luke Fickell, and Matt Rhule are all stand outs to replace Frost in Lincoln. Campbell in particular has been associated by many as the potential replacement. He has coached Iowa State to a 44-34 record since 2016. Historically Iowa state has had much difficulty maintaining success, but Campbell has made the team a consistent bowl team. At Nebraska he’d be in familiar territory with a much higher budget and better facilities.
