Plane Crash
Five people killed in plane crash at Kennedy International Airport in New York. The returning flight crashed on takeoff with forty-five passengers and crew members.
Professors John Dumont and George Johnson of Backwater State University were both among the passengers. They were attending conferences and were on the same TWA flight that crashed. Both professors escaped injury.

OK on the lead, but “were killed” or “died”
Not specifically a lead for a BSU audience, but it works. Rather than “were among the passengers” use “survived.” Less confusion.
