by Alyssa Nehring–On February’s All Campus Event Day, while the upperclassmen took advantage of the opportunity to sleep in, freshmen were up and at Eppley Auditorium by 10 a.m.
The freshman class spent the morning transitioning into their academic departments and meeting their academic advisors.
Traditionally, students would transition and meet with their department advisor at the beginning of their sophomore year, rather than the end of their freshman year. The goal driving the earlier transition is that current first-year students would get the opportunity to meet their advisor and start their growth within the department.
Lillian Lopez, Vice President for Advising, says, “The new model is a hybrid where the Krone Advising Center and Faculty will continue to assist each other in providing the best academic advising to our first-year students.”
As part of the transitions that are happening at Morningside College, the Krone Advising center will also be experiencing changes. Starting in the Fall of 2018, the Krone Advising Center will have two first-year advisors. These advisors will be working with students who are interested in Business, Accounting, Nursing, Elementary Education, and those students who are still exploring.
These students are often taking more general education classes along with classes in their major during the first year or they must apply to enter the program, whereas other majors on campus take more major focused classes. The new advising model is designed to designed to continue to create a strong bond between the first year student, their academic department, and the Krone Advising Center.
