Peters Park food trucks offer tasty options

Food Trucks in Morningside
by Sara Alexander–Tired of eating cafeteria food every day? New lunch options are now available for students just a short walking distance from campus.

Local food trucks can be found in Peter’s Park at the Morningside Public Library on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Several different types of food are offered, including BBQ, Mexican, and more. The twice weekly event is an extension of Sioux City’s Food Truck Fridays, which was a weekly lunchtime gathering of regional food trucks on downtown 4th Street during the summer months.

One of the trucks is Killer B’s BBQ. They offer burgers, brisket, pulled pork and more. The truck was started last summer by Jeremy and Christopher Baltushis, who both grew up in Morningside. They opted for a food truck over “a brick and mortar restaurant because we wanted flexibility.”

For new visitors who may be unsure of what to order, Baltushis says, “I highly recommend the B-Sting sandwich that consists of a smoked cheeseburger topped with pulled pork.”

Another food truck, Shorty’s, specializes in corndogs, fried marshmallows, tornado potatoes, and occasionally other foods served on sticks.

Berry Belcher, owner of Shorty’s, started his food truck this summer as a way to spend more time with his family and teach his kids about business. According to Belcher, the response from Peter’s Park has been positive so far. He suggests attendees try his corndogs by saying, “People may think they have had a corndog before and that there is nothing special about them. They would be wrong. I make the batter by hand, and I use a top-notch all beef hot dog. I then drizzle honey and mustard over them which takes it to a whole different level.”

Belcher adds, “I would love to see more students come by my truck.” He says that he will “give a free deep fried marshmallow with every corndog purchase” to those who let him know they are Morningside students.

Along with Killer B’s BBQ and Shorty’s, other local trucks such as El Gordo and Fresh will be present. The food trucks will be in Peter’s Park at the Morningside Public Library on both Wednesdays and Fridays for as many weeks as the weather allows; no specific end date has been set.
