Documentary Review: 30 for 30

30_30_logo_red-e1308143642557By Taylor Pluim–30 for 30 is a documentary series that documents the stories of various athletes and sports teams. The series is usually played on the ESPN’s, but some are also available to watch on Netflix.

The 30 for 30 series documents athletes from the NBA to NASCAR. Each episode does something new; there are only a few continuations. Their goal is to give you a more intimate look into players or teams stories.

An example of one is the documentary they did on the Detroit Pistons basketball team in the late 80’s and early 90’s. It showed how the team came to be and how they grew together to become champions and how they split. They interviewed individual players, coaches, and the owner, as well as other media personnel. This gives their side of the story, not just the medias depiction of them.

Overall, I would say these documentaries are done very well. They are both entertaining and education. Some people might not view them as educational because it’s about sports, but you can still learn from the life mistakes of these players and possibly transfer some of their success stories into your own life. They are also good for people who saw some of the sports events live who want a behind the scenes look, but also interesting for people who weren’t around for some of the sporting events that are talked about. I think they would also be interesting for people who aren’t even sports fans. That is because they are more about the stories of the players and teams than about the sports themselves. If you like documentary style films then I would highly recommend watching these.
