By Kayla Perkins—Disney fans, if you loved Maleficent then look no longer, because Cinderella is the film for you. Cinderella is a 2015 live-action romantic fantasy based on the fairy tale of the same name, with aspects of the 1950 Disney version included. The film stars Ella (Lily James), as she struggles to survive the wrath of her step-mother, Lady Tremaine, and her step-sisters, Anastasia and Drisella. The film also focuses on Ella’s blooming romance with Prince Charming, and her ability to “have courage, and be kind.”
Cinderella is set in the 1800’s France, where Ella lives on a beautiful estate with her family. Forced to do all of the chores, and banished to the attic, Ella gets ash on her face, or cinders, gaining the name “Cinderella.”
In the beginning of the film, Ella’s mother becomes ill, and her final message to her daughter is that she must always believe in magic, have courage, and be kind. Ella does just that, and as a result she is able to go to the ball and meet her Prince Charming, a young man named Kit.
Throughout the film she faces several challenges and losses, but her strength and determination garner her a happily ever after.
I enjoyed this film very much, and would recommend it for all audiences. There is a very realistic sense to the culture of the film, with many aspects of the aristocrats of the 1800s, such as powdered wigs and elaborate decorations and clothing, with a dash of adventure, and an overall sense of fantasy. One of my favorite things about the film was the costumes, which were beautifully designed. In fact, if I were to give a word to describe this movie, it would be “pretty.” The film is not childish in any form, and can appeal to all audiences. I am giving this film a 10/10, as I cannot find anything significant enough to give it anything less. This film is enrapturing, and one I would go see again.
