Movie Review: The Gambler

The_Gambler_posterBy Derek Krayenhagen—The Gambler doesn’t take your breath away but it won’t bore you to death either. The Gambler is more about the storyline rather than the action. The banter and writing tries to stand alone while it doesn’t do a bad job, a little more oomph could have done this movie some good.

The Gambler has been out of theaters so start looking for it in stores or you could probably watch it through select movie channels or PPV’s. The Gambler’s greatest strength is the plot/style. Jim Bennet (Wahlberg) plays a college professor and avid gambler. When Jim gets in over his head he risks it all to repay his debts.

The Gambler shows a different cinematic style, it explores different angles and each scene is set up well. The director took the time to pay attention to the details.

The weaknesses are evident as well. The Gambler isn’t that entirely eye catching. If you aren’t a huge movie person, it may not be for you, or it could be right up your alley. The movie in general is very hit or miss.

If you are looking for something different then The Gambler could be a great movie to watch. The dialogue is strong and the movie’s plot is solid, just don’t expect to see something like you’ve never seen before because this movie just isn’t it.
